News report from Manchester Evening News gives more specifics - it is a ”’suspicious’ suitcase” on Greek St Bridge. (edit - I think that’s what it says, but not sure of the location exactly. This has been corrected below)

A large cordon is in place with trains cancelled and bomb units called after reports of a 'suspicious' incident near to Stockport railway station.

Police, fire crews and paramedics are in attendance on Greek Street in Stockport this evening, with a 200m cordon currently in place while emergency crews work at the scene.

The incident is focussed around a footbridge at Stockport railway station with all trains currently unable to serve the station. It's thought emergency crews were called to reports of a 'suspicious' suitcase.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said, “Just before 6pm this evening (Tuesday, 4th November), firefighters were called to reports of a suspicious item on Greek Street in Stockport.

“Two fire engines from Stockport and Whitehill fire stations, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton fire station, are currently at the scene where a suitcase has been left on the footbridge by Stockport railway station."

It is a separate footbridge to the main Greek St. Bridge - and which has been recently named after Driver John Axon GC.

Normal working granted about 10 minutes ago, nothing untoward with the suitcase.

1H33 16:53 Euston-Manchester reversed at Cheadle Hulme and got to Wilmslow, presumably with a view to reversing again and using the Styal line, but may now change its plans again. Currently in platform 4.
EDIT 1H33 now going back down on the reversible up line to Cheadle Hulme. Its passengers will be getting dizzy!

Why is it that anyone was publicly calling it an "unexploded IED"? That's absurd. It was a suspicious object, and hyping it up may have given the author a nice adrenaline rush, but it was not professional.

Because people love to sensationalise, or quote control logs verbatim which can be ambiguous/inaccurate in the fact finding stage and so are supposed to be kept internal for that very reason.
