Assuming there are no industrial disputes what should be the situation with services on 1st Jan 2012. Will it be a normal Sunday timetable?

Most TOCs operate a normal timetable on New years day as they do on other bank holidays. I'm sure there will be exceptions though, ScotRail immediately spring to mind and I'm sure T&W Northern services didn't run on New years day but I'm not sure what the current set up is with those.

Northern Rail were on strike around Christmas/New Year.

The 2010 Northern Rail strike involved NW Guards as far as I remember the eastern side of the company wasn't on strike.

That was because there was something to do with T&W services not operating on that day. I have a memory of NE local services not running on New years day annually rather than as a dispute. Possibly something to do with the PTE? It may have changed now and maybe someone in that area could confirm?

There are no rail services in England on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, despite all the sport events and sales that start on Boxing Day.

I lived right next to the Sunderland to Newcastle line for the first eighteen years of my life, and I can't remember for sure but as far as I can recall Christmas day, Boxing Day and New Years Day were noteable for being the only three days of the year when we got some peace and quiet from trains passing all the time.
Having never had a requirement to travel on New Years Day before or since moving away from Sunderland, I had assumed that no trains running that day was the case everywhere in the UK right up to reading this thread. I've been back in Sunderland visiting family at New Year for the last two years, and I don't recall noticing any trains passing throughout the day, though I won't have been paying much attention even if they were: Surely there is a limited Tyne & Wear Metro service to Sunderland on January 1st nowadays?

Usually a late start up, then a Saturday service on Merseyrail.
This year it'll be a Sunday service, as New Years Day is.... a Sunday!

Seems a lot of the bus companies are cashing in on demand for services on boxing day and new years day in south wales. Cardiff bus will be operating a special timetable for these days and i know there is a possibility that soem routes could be operating in swansea on boxing and new years day.
I even know of 1 bus route in south wales which runs on christmas day.
As for lack of trains, i understand that a lot of staff would not exactly be too happy to work these days, thats aid there may be some who would volunteer to work especially if they have no dependends like myself.
I know when i went to a interview for a job with stagecoach i mentioned that i was happy to work christmas day etc especially since the roads would be quiet.
I even know of 1 bus route in south wales which runs on christmas day.

In London there were extra early morning services on New Years Day on certain lines last year, I remember the posters at London Bridge on my way down to Canterbury on New Years Eve.
No Boxing Day services last year - I had to use a National Express coach to get to Cardiff.
I remember bus services didn't start until well after 10 in the West Midlands - useless for the sales.

There was no service at all on New Years Day 2010 here in the North East, on Northern especially. GC I don't know, maybe.

I travelled Brighton-Birmingham via Kensington Olympia that day, so Southern and Virgin were definitely running (probably a reduced service).

South West Trains usually operate a Saturday service on New Years Day to the best of my knowledge.
I know in the NHS a lot of the asian staff enjoy Christmas shifts for that reason, you get paid extra, and to them it's just another day (admittedly working New Years Eve in A & E I'm not sure there's such thing as enough pay).

I've worked Christmas Day 2004, when I worked in a 118 call centre and living away from family. I took the triple pay for Christmas Day, double for Boxing Day and two bank holidays in lieu, and saw the family over new year's instead.

For the Next sale and other ones that start in the early hours of the morning no Public Transport will be running anyway!
Last Year Next were shut boxing day (as it was a Sunday) and there were loads of people walking up and trying the door

You are correct different cultures have their own views,I make no other comment due to the PC brigade hovering.Some supermarkets such as Bradford etc open Xmas Day
Anyhow, on Xmas day & St Stephens day we have one Arriva bus running from Rhyl to a local hospital, done this for 50 years to my knowledge.
Spar already have a sign out, open as usual on Xmas Day,although sales of booze are on restricted hours.

Boxing Day is always affected by major engineering line blocks at certain locations where things like major junction or bridge renewals , or signalling commissions (Newport last year for example)
Most franchises dont have a requirment for services this day - though some LSE routes do now , (Southern , SET etc) - where trains have run , they are on restricted hours and are very costly to run due to pay increments - costs which apply also to signal box opening hours also.
In theory , a service could be provided subject to crew , and other staff availability -if a deal could be done on funding. Service groups running in power box areas obviously much easier to arrange than say on the regional routes which need large numbers of smaller boxes opened up.
