Serbian Railways electric locomotives

Hi all,

A few years ago basically all freight services on electrified lines in Serbia were hauled by the ŽS 441/444/461 locomotives. However, now, most seem to be hauled by either Vectrons or foreign locomotives (for example, GFR and PIMK). This was very noticeable recently at Resnik were I didn’t see a single of the older types apart from on the passenger train to Bar.

Does anyone know why there are so many foreign locomotives working through now compared to a few years ago? The vectrons number around 20, so shouldn’t have really made significant inroads on the hundreds of older AC electric locomotives. Also, does anyone know where I can still see the older types on freight trains?

Can’t believe that “Serbian Railways” and “hundreds of electric locomotives” really belong in the same sentence (without a “not” in there). Anyway - same thing as has happened everywhere else - market liberalisation.

Weren't many of the JZ locos licence-built copies of foreign designs?

Yes. Mostly ASEA Rb and Rc designs.
