Know this subject has been done death. But need some assurance.

Thinking of travelling from Aberdeen to London Euston via Glasgow Q Street / Glagow Central. Arriving into Glasgow QS at 11:14, departing Glasgow C at 12:40.

Want to buy seperate advance purchase tickets (standard to Glasgow, first class onto Euston). If ScotRail train into Glasgow Q S is more than (say) 60 mins late, I'll miss my onward Virgin train. Will Virgin honour the seperately bought advance purchase ticket on their next departure ? (the next departure is at 13:40, and is considerable more than 12:40 one.)

Think the answer is yes, they'll honour. Thanks again. Of course, this is highly unlikely.

Seeing as you just want assurances, you would be much better off asking Virgin directly.

What, you want me to say "yes you are covered but some staff will disagree" followed by HHF saying "no you are not covered" and then 20 pages repeating the same arguments as in at least 5 previous topics in the past few months?

Thanks but I'll pass! :lol::lol::lol:

I think it's fair to say opinions differ but you'll probably be OK.

But then you knew that...

I hear shinsanken1966 has something positive to quote from a senior ATOC contact in the unlikely event of any problems. I would also advice anyone forced to buy a new ticket in such circumstances to consider getting a UPFN and appeal it.

Buy all the tickets in one single transaction
If possible, pay by Credit Card
Obtain a receipt

I missed a northbound connection on two separate tickets, as the first was extremely late
Ask the staff on that late train to stamp your ticket
However, as you are arriving into Glasgow QS, wait until you arrive there then go to the Travel Centre and they will stamp your ticket that you arrived late
Next go to the Travel Centre at Glasgow Central and present your ticket, they should stamp the ticket and/or replace it with a ticket valid on the next available service

Thanks for this advice. Knew I shouldn't have started this thread. Hey, ho. ;)

Don't worry, I'm only joking. I'm sure HHF will see the funny side too ;)

If there is a delay (which hopefully there won't be!) please do let us know how it went. I can only repeat what I have said earlier, that I have never had a problem doing this, even obtaining taxis. But of course as we know from this forum others have experienced problems, so nothing can be guaranteed.

Whats date for your trip & what budget have you set for trip? doing quick check for through tickets next week found AP ticket for under £50 going & same coming back.
Might be worth looking at that option rather than splitting option.

It is worth looking at through tickets. But I wouldn't pay more than perhaps a couple of quid extra for a through ticket, given that I believe it gives no additional rights, although it would depend on the circumstances. I would pay more than a couple of quid more if it was late at night and could result in the last train missed, because you don't want an argument over a taxi/accomodation, and also if it's a different TOC or involves TOCs with some rude staff (e.g. London & South East area TOCs). But IMO you are paying extra for no true additional validity and simply to avoid a potential argument. It's difficult to put a value on that, it really depends on the circumstances.

Some passengers do seem assume that split tickets will always be cheaper, because of sites like MSE (Money Saving Expert) constantly telling the media about it (which, don't get me wrong, is a good thing, but it is an oversimplification). Some also have no idea that "& Connections" tickets exist. Sometimes you need to specify unusual 'via' points in order to get a good through ticket (possibly to avoid being put on a connecting train that doesn't have a good quota of AP availability). For example York to East Croydon, can be worth putting via London Bridge to avoid conflicts with Southern's semi-bookable trains, or Leeds to St Pancras can be worth putting via Rotherham.

Wanted to travel standard class all the way from Aberdeen to Euston. But the cost of an advance purchased first class fare for the Glagow C->Euston leg looked appealing.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Bought a one way first advance on Virgin for £49 from Glasgow C to Euston. Struck me as good value. Now what can I expect in First Class on a 12:40 soutbound departure mid week in November ? :D

The Aberdeen to Glasgow QS ticket wil be £10.30 in standard. So overall, that's £59 Aberdeen to Euston. Not bad !

Perfect trip.

Train from Aberdeen to Glasgow QS arrived on time at 11:14. Plenty of time to stroll across to Glasgow C for the 12:40 Virgin Pend to Euston. Travelled first class on Virgin. On board service was good with drinks, several sandwiches and cake. Free WiFi was a bit on and off. With plenty of tilt action, arrived into Euston at 17:07, 5 mins early :D

Unlike the Megabus/train on Monday morning. The onward coach from East Midlands Parkway to Bradford was so late, that I abandoned it altogether at Huddersfield.
