Semaphore signalling maintenance expertise in 2014

With the move to accelerate elimination of mechanical signalling, there's obviously a diminishing amount of maintenance work focused on semaphore signals.

I was wondering how many locations around the country (signalling depots, workshops etc) still have facilities and skills to work on semaphore signalling?

Obviously there have been no new mechanical installations for years, and if a particular semaphore arm or other mechanical fitting needs to be replaced (e.g. for corrosion) there's probably no shortage of recovered components which can be refurbishing, repainted and re-fitted.

But where is this kind of thing done?

- Is there one NR workshop somewhere in the country with a warehouse full of old mechanical signalling kit (plus a few pots of the right shades of red & yellow paint and coloured glass for spectacle lenses) and a handful of old-timers who know their trade backwards?
- Or are there still several locations, based on the old BR Regions?
- Or is the work contracted out to some anonymous-sounding firm on a new industrial park outside Milton Keynes?

I'm envisioning young technician-type at a stores counter with a Home signal tucked under his arm and docket in hand, speaking to veteran storeman in brown dustcoat. Old Fred shakes head with sharp intake of breath. "Sorry son, there's no call for upper quadrant 'round 'ere".

And when would be the last time a brand-new, BR-pattern Home or Distant signal arm was stamped out?

There's still a good number of semaphore signals installed each year, mostly as a replacement for existing signals that are past their best. You can tell which ones are the new ones, as even a simple straight post will be turned into an enormous galvanised steel monstrosity (to provide an adequate working platform, hooped ladder and the rest) - I'll leave it to the S&T chaps on here to judge whether it's actually safer or not in practice! There have been one or two 'new' installations too, in recent years - Shrewsbury (platform 3 starter towards Hereford) and Banbury (up starter from the down platform?) both spring to mind, although both were replacing a shunt route with a fully-signalled move.

You would be surprised with regards to spares. It's taken our lot 5-6 months to replace a lens on one our arms, and they are still no closer (had to be ordered in)

I believe is S&T work in an area with mechanical signalling, then they are trained and maintain their competency in mechanical signalling (+ anything else they are responsible for), locking fitters is a different story. I believe there is only a handful left that cover the country (ours come from about 200-300 miles away!!)

They don't do just relocking, they also do 6 monthly (?) maintenance on the frames. grease it up, replace anything thats broken, give it a good clean. Ours sometimes sort out our wire and rodding runs if they are a bit worse for wear

Interesting thread this! What about illumination of the signal lenses? Are any still oil lit, and if so are there still any dedicated lampmen in employment on the national network?

I can't say for definite, there is bound to be at least 1 oil lit one out there! Most have been converted to a led with battery setup

Components are recovered and maintained, or supplied refurbished by NRS/Unipart. Preserved lines, believe it or not, also supply spares and undertake contract work for NR, often as a swap for consumables they need.

Can you add a few more question marks to that, please!!

We lost our oil lamps tears ago, but they have recently replaced all the old bulbs with LED's.
I know that a lot of the Cambrian was still oil lit before they removed everything with ERTMS. The Lamp Room still stands at Caersws. Almost hidden in the bushes here:

Mechanical signalling is alive and well on most heritage lines. There have been some sizable installations in recent years, including the new signalling on the Great Central at Swithland and the redeployment at Grosmont of the gantry from Scarborough.

I know of a couple of heritage railways why have had new items made, including new pressed arms, subsequently stove-enamelled.

Even at St Albans South we're keeping a few of the skills alive with signals working in the garden etc.

I wonder if that is of GWR vintage? Incidentally does the signal gantry that is visible beyond Caersws station still exist since the introduction of ERTMS? Haven't travelled on the Cambrian since 2004 when heading to Aberdyfi, beautiful journey!

Wouldn't surprise me!!

All signals removed.
