no, I don't think so, you have probably spent more time looking at the rules than they have!

It thinks that the :12 departures from New Street to Bristol pass through Selly Oak, but not University. The :42 departures apparently don't pass through either.

...and none of them go through Northfield, but they all go through Longbridge....

I think the oddity here is due to the fact that New St, Selly Oak, Kings Norton and Longbridge are all mandatory timing points so will show in a TRUST line up. University and Northfield are only required to be in the schedules if you stop.

the xx:42 goes via the Camp Hill avoiding line
What's the Camp Hill avoiding line? I think you mean they go via Camp Hill.
I doubt very, very much that any of the Guards on the local services would say anything to someone travelling in/out from New St to one of the Cross City south stations, bearing in mind it is all but impossible to do such a journey with the current train service pattern.
Strictly speaking, to avoid doubling back, if doing say Bournevile to Cheltenham you should only board one of the xx:42 departures from BHM. However it would be ludicrous to enforce that rule and, as you say no guard is going to complain at a passenger going North from those stations to head South (which is valid anyway) and no guard is going to complain about a customer then getting the xx:12 departure from BHM (which isn't valid but how are customers supposed to know?!)

I've always been told to apply a little logic, especially when service frequency to/from a station is concerned. The no doubling back rule is rather vague, because it DOES permit doubling back for your journey so long as you haven't previously called at a more suitable connecting point. Sticking in the West Midlands, look at Bromsgrove to Barnt Green. One direct train southbound and two direct trains northbound. All journeys are valid via University, but not New St, because all services to/from Bromsgrove call at University. If you're on one of the direct services, then it isn't valid to travel via University obviously. Does that make any sense. This does throw up the fare oddity that unless on a service calling at Barnt Green, and you wish to travel between Bromsgrove and University, buy a return between Bromsgrove and Barnt Green and pay £2.70SDR rather than £5.70SDR. Just to finish, people familiar with the line geography will know that with the exception of when those direct service trains run, all journeys from stations between Redditch-Selly Oak to Bromsgrove will be valid via University.

The point is that it is not called the Camp Hill avoiding line, it is just "Camp Hill," as opposed to "Church Road" for going via University.

Let's sort it once and for all. Between Kings Norton and New Street the two routes are Camp Hill (via Moseley) and the West Suburban Line (via Selly Oak)

I guess via University would be the Camp Hill avoiding line! ;)

Camp Hill doesn't avoid New Street anyway, as obviously the xx:42 trains go from New Street to King's Norton via Camp Hill. Indeed a look on Quail shows the Up & Down Camp Hill joining the Up & Down Derby lines at Grand Jn toward BHM. To avoid New Street you turn off the Camp Hill avoiding line before this point at St Andrews Jn, this then joins the Derby line at Duddeston Jn.

Details aside, the only point which is relevant and which I was trying to contribute to this thread is that xx:42 trains don't go via University, therefore a Selly Oak - Avonmouth ticket could be used on this service without any additional Requirement to purchase multiple tickets.
