This info is out of date,
Its been quite a while since I was a guard!

Thats my excuse and I am sticking to it! ;)

during last summer the starter signal at Fareham was moved a couple of yards so that on a 12 car set the front 8 can be opened as normal. Hilsea remains a peculiarity in that it 8 coaches that can be opened on an 8 car set but only 4 if it's a 12 car set-on both up and down lines.
Forgot about the signal (and "S" mark) being moved.

It is a horrendous system, when working a 12 car set from Portsmouth to London via Eastleigh you can have up to 9 consecutive SDO stops with the following coach lengths: 8-4-8-4-8-4-8-8-4 so that's a lot of running up and down the train.:D

Look on it as a bit of excercise, some of the guards are getting as fat as us drivers! ;)

The 377s use ASDO which is what the SWT Desiros will soon be using, 375s are probably the same.

Electrostars is GPS based though I believe whereas SWT will be using track side balises.

375/7 is indeed GPS based, MITRAC knows where it is and opens the maximum number of doors for that location. On the rare occasion it loses its signal we simply type the name of the station in and release...on even rarer occasions (especially nowadays) you can do an emergency release by highlighting which doors you want to open. This happened frequently at Hampden Park a number of years ago when two or more units with different software versions were running around.

In certain locations where platform lengths vary such as Portslade SDO becons in the four foot transmit info to MITRAC so the maximum doors for that platform are available.

The SDO/UDS feature on the Desiro's is pretty basic and as 455driver has mentioned you need to be in the leading cab of the unit you wish to lock out. I wouldn't say it's completely useless though, it does pose issues with 444s at LDO (local door opening) stops. When ASDO is rolled out over the course of the next couple of years it should make things a bit easier. :)

Be interesting to see what effect it has on the Desiros reliability figures. Apparently all the sdo fiascos experienced on the Pompey line with combos was put down as operation rather than engineering delays

Curious, are you talking about incorrect door operation? If so, then it would be recorded as operational rather than as a fleet or 'engineering' delay, as fleet stuff should only cover actual train faults or defects rather than crew error.
