Selective Door Opening Failure

Strange one at Euston - a Southbound Northern Line train pulls in the the Bank branch platforms, and the doors don't open for 10 seconds or so. Then they all open, including the rearmost doors which are normally kept closed (albeit fit in to the platform OK if the train stops in the right position!).

The rearmost doors alone closed after another 10 seconds, don't think there was any warning of this.

Then all the other doors closed as normal a while later.

Just a little whoopsie or something more serious?

This is probably what has occurred...

Sometimes, even when the train is running in ATO, they will go ever so slightly beyond the stopping mark and 'accurate stop' does not appear on the train operator display. This means the driver has to open the doors using the 'correct side door enable' button and apply the procedure. In addition to that, on shorter platforms with end doors cut out (like Euston southbound on the Bank branch), the driver needs to press the 'end door cut out' button after pressing the CSDE button. I would imagine the driver has forgotten to push that button.

I would describe that as a little whoopsie.

The end door cut out button on a 73 stock only works on the front doors. Just for my own knowledge, is it different on the Northern Line stock?

Interesting, thanks.
And the S stock is different again - EDO (Emergency Door Open) will cut out all doors on the front and rear cars.

I had thought I’d sent a detailed response to this yesterday, but clearly not…! The Czech beer must have got to me and I didn’t press send.

I don't know what the official term for this is but I was on a late evening service (probably around half midnight) at Turnpike Lane a few weeks back and only about half the doors on the train opened - a number of the single doors remained closed and only one half of some of the double doors opened.

I think I vaguely remember seeing that this was an option during winter on cold outdoor stations and this would keep passengers warm? But I assume this was also not an intentional operation of this feature? I've never actually seen this happen myself before and it almost caught me off guard as I was waiting to exit at one of the single doors which didn't open, and only when I noticed movement on the platform did I realise one of the doors further down the carriage had opened.

I suspect this will be Selective Door Close - it basically inhibits the majority of the door engines. The original intention was for heat retention at terminus stations, but is generally rarely used nowadays, and certainly is not common at all in tunnel sections (albeit not prohibited). Again, it could be a driver operating it accidentally, or it could be a fault with the train (or the secret third option, a driver operating it deliberately for whatever reason!).

It is unusual for all of the doors to not open first and then selectively close (the clue is in the name) but theoretically if you're quick enough with the various buttons you can prevent them opening in the first place.

Waterloo on the Southbound platform is another place where it's notorious for trains overshooting the platform
