Selecting correct class for post-purchase reservation

Yesterday I took the 15.11 LNER train from Peterborough to London with Interrail but got a reservation from the GWR site just in case. In the first dialogue I deselected First Class, then selected the train, then selected Anytime Day Single since that appeared to be the most similar to Interrail; I figured it wouldn't really matter anyway.

I got a reservation in the D carriage, which was first class. I decided to sit in the C carriage instead which was almost empty.

How could I have made sure my reservation would have been in a second class carriage?

You can reserve with a seat selector for LNER on their own site. Enter any 5 digit number for the ticket number other than 0.

D is half first class though, you were probably in the Standard bit.

Carriage D is 50/50 standard class and first class. I would expect that your seat will have been in the standard class half (seats 51-88 according to the seat map).

In general what you did is usually the best way to get a seat reservation, although on LNER you can use their seat selector without holding a ticket. For the ticket number just put a random number in.

Despite what the Interrail app says, you don't need a reservation on any UK trains except the sleeper services.

Though if using LNER or Lumo you are very highly advised to get one as there are very few unreserved seats so you have a high risk of standing at busy times.
