"Security alert on a train at Wilmslow"

Reminds me of my time as a student; I was at Birmingham New Street in 2001 not long after the 9/11 attacks; obviously everyone was jumpy.

The station was evacuated during the morning peak due to the discovery of a suspect package; the army came along and carried out a controlled explosion. Upon investigation, it was a bird table that some lad had been making for his GCSE coursework!

I would like to see how he explained that one to his woodwork teacher...

Only slightly related but my older brother once left his school backpack at a bus stop in Catterick Garrison during the height of the IRA bombing campaign... He was lucky not to get it blown up, the story goes that my father was one of the soldiers who got called out to help enforce the cordon and recognised it.

Nearly had one last week, on the Leeds-Nottingham train; someone got on at Sheffield and had put their bag above the (empty) seat at the end of the carriage, then sat down 4-5 rows of seats in front of it and put their headphones on.

Guard came, asked whose bag it was and got no response, checked the toilets, then came back and asked louder. Owner of bag finally heard, got a telling off about what happened in Manchester a couple of days earlier and took the bag down to where he was sat, like he could've done in the first place

If it isn't Hidden, if it isn't Obviously suspicious and if it's Typical of its location then it isn't really a suspicious bag.

If the bag triggered any of the H-O-T protocols then it is suspicious and nobody should have gone near it.

The post says the guard stated he assumed it was suspicious, which it can only really be if it has triggered any of the H-O-T protocols, therefore it should not have been moved.
