No details known, but how awful for all of Merseyrail and of course the family. Can only wonder if the second incident relates to the first :( .

Some more detail on the Liverpool Echo web site: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/man-dies-after-being-hit-7706460

From the description in the article it seems to be a different crossing to the one involved in last week's tragedy.

A man has died after he was struck by a train on Merseyside this morning.

British Transport Police have confirmed that the man was killed after being hit by a train near Freshfield crossing off Victoria Road at around 10.30am today.

A spokesman said: “We were called at 10.40am to reports that somebody had been hit by a train near Freshfield crossing. When we attended we discovered that had been killed after being struck by a train.”

The spokesman said investigations are continuing but the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Emergency services remain at the scene. Police are now working to identify the man and takes to steps to inform his next of kin. A file will be passed to the coroner’s office.

Merseyrail confirmed the train which struck the man was heading from Hunts Cross to Southport. As a result of the incident the Southport line is blocked and Merseyrail have put a replacement bus service in place between Hall Road and Southport.

The death comes less than week since a university graduate was struck and killed by a train further down the track while reportedly trying to rescue a dog.

Most of info known about first incident

Second incident

Speculation is the second was a suicide, obviously that's subject to further investigation and coroner verdict. Suspect it's just coincidence that they've occurred so close to each other (unless press coverage of the first encouraged the second to use the train as method). The first one was an unsupervised foot crossing with a gate either side to open, the second was full automatic barriers, crossings are pictured in both reports.

Ah, sorry I've misread "near" as "at", initial reports yesterday said it was at the crossing. I assume confusion has come about because that was used as nearest access point to the scene by emergency services.
