A bookseller (part-time and semi-retired).

Shame about that! I seem to get different results from AbeBooks and Amazon, so I take it they are operated separately?

Brighton in general is good for secondhand bookshops, particularly in the North Laine area immediately southeast of the station, but I can recommend a place called Colin Page Antiquarian Books at 36 Duke Street (nice central location, near the Clock Tower). It covers all subjects but had a decent transport section last time I went. Not cheap, but a good place to find real rarities.

Can you give us some idea of the subject matter and perhaps the date of publication - or at least the probable decade of publication? It's possible someone on here might be able to suggest likely titles/authors to ease your search.

Not a specialist but David's bookshop in Letchworth Garden City (a 3 minute walk from the station) has a large secondhand section upstairs. one of the rooms contains several shelves of railway books including old timetables (sometimes working/goods timetables etc) and occasionally fares manuals etc.
Some of their books are available online through abebooks but mainly the rarer
titles.

if using abebooks to find books from any supplier you can set up a search alert so you get an email when new books matching your requirememts are added. also try ebay searches (again set up a search alert)

The Class 47 Preservation Project Sales Dept carry a wide range of second hand books on many different aspects of railways,including steam, modern traction, modelling etc.

The Book Depository is also owned by Amazon. Abe Books is owned and controlled by Amazon but the books are offered by individual booksellers who operate under licence to Amazon, and the transaction is between the customer and the individual bookseller. This situation is allowed by our 'competition' authorities - I have no further comment to make on that, other than that I refuse to take part in the farrago.
