I’m on the way back to London from today’s Sunderland game on a split ticket (booked through Trainsplit) with an itinerary of:

18:01 TPE Newcastle-York
19:31 LNER York-London

Got the TPE, arrived at York and found the LNER cancelled. The 19:17 LNER was pulling in, spoke to an LNER staff member on the platform who said I was okay to board (I made a note of his name). Also spoke to the lady in the catering car and asked for the train manager but couldn’t find them, however that’s two staff members I’ve spoken to who’ve given permission to travel so I assume I'm okay if there’s a ticket check.

There is another LNER at York at 19:55 but I’ll also use the argument that I can take the train either side of my booked one as it’s been cancelled?

Yes you're fine to do what you've done:

If your ticket is for an LNER, Northern or TransPennine Express train, you can travel on your existing ticket on ANY of these operators within two hours before or after your cancelled train.

Also the specific advice for your cancelled train on the LNER disruption page:

(Image shows usual advice of travel 2 hours before or after or two LNER services before or after for passengers intending to use the 1827 Newcastle to Kings Cross)

Thanks, by the time I’d checked the departure boards and found my booked train cancelled I only had a few minutes so didn’t check the website as I was focussing on finding an LNER staff member and/or going to the ticket office to check what to do.

No worries! And having been in similar positions over the years I well know the feeling of trying to nail down what I can and cannot do whilst the train is rolling in imminently!
