Seating configuration on Southern 377's

A truly thrilling topic...but I wondered if there is any rationale behind the seating configurations on Southern 377's? I've noted at least 3 variants per 4 car set

1) 2+2 seating throughout
2) 3+2 in centre carriages and 2+2 in end carriages
3) 3+2 in centre of each carriage and 2+2 at the end of each carriage

Possibly some trains with 3+2 throughout too?

I always seek out the 2+2 seating for proper tables personally, but I wonder why there's so much variation? Southeastern's fleet seems more uniform.

I think the 377/1s with 2+2 throughout were originally intended for Brighton fast services. There was an attempt to answer your question last summer, post #7 mentions the 2+2 stuff…

Different orders. The mixed seating arrangements reflect the fact that the slam door stock had either 2+2 seating or 2+3 seating, and seated capacity needed to be broadly maintained by the 377s.
