Season Ticket

Hi,

Upon purchasing a 7-day season ticket, can I use my Railcard Photocard or does it need to be a specific Season ticket Photocard?

a photocard is a photocard there is no different one for season ticket, they just match up the season ticket to the number on your photocard

At first I thought you didn't need a photocard for a 7 day ticket, yet when I checked National Rail it is unclear:

You can buy a season ticket at any staffed ticket office. If you are buying a Monthly or longer season ticket for the first time, you'll need to complete an application form.

You will need a recent passport-type photograph for the accompanying photo card
To avoid the queues, it's best to avoid buying your ticket on weekday mornings
If you already have a photocard, you may be able to buy seven day season tickets at self-service ticket machines.

Photocards
You need a photocard to buy most Season Tickets. These are issued free of charge from ticket offices. You must provide a recent passport-type photograph of yourself

does it matter? if you need a photocard just use the one you have, if you dont need one then no worries there either

Just checking they weren't going to be fussy and say 'no, that photocard is for your railcard, you need to buy another for your season ticket' Yeh I figured they'd just match the number.

All season tickets, regardless of length, must be accompanied by a photocard bearing the same number as is printed on the actual ticket.

Eh? Railcards don't have seperate photocards, and a railcard can't be used as a photocard. For a season you need a pink Photocard, which will be supplied at no cost with a season ticket. A preexisting photocard can be used for any future reason ticket.

The ones issued online don't as they have photos embedded into the railcard itself. The ones issued at stations have separate photocard and railcard components.

My experience, albeit from 2006, was that it depends. The first time I purchased a weekly at Reading station I didn't have a photo with me so the guy just used my railcard photocard, but he said that I really should have a separate photocard for seasons, so when I went back to buy a monthly I brought a photo with me just in case.

So in conclusion, it depends. Some staff might well insist that you have a separate photocard and I won't be surprised if it were the case

The official line from "The Manual" is that you can use a Young Persons or 16-25 Photocard "in an emergency" for a 7 Day Season or Travelcard, but you have to get a "proper" Season Ticket photocard before you can buy the next one.

Photocards are NOT required for 7 Day "In-Boundary" Travelcards or for Travelcards loaded onto Oyster.

Whoops, been too long since I had one obviously! I was just thinking the thing with the photo in was the railcard, but of course it's not. Mine would never have been much use though as the number was written in marker pen and was totally illegible after a year or two - smudged everywhere!

I think I was assuming the photocard wouldn't be in the season ticket system, but thinking about it of course it could be used as accompanying ID (if only unofficially).

Rather irritating... two ticket offices said I needed a separate photocard for the Season Ticket so had to buy a photo from a booth at the last minute!

The railcard one had no barcode and the code was completely different in format (pure numbers) to the Season Ticket photocard (three letters, three numbers and a letter I think).

...and despite the instructions then saying much the same thing, it caused a big argument with another member of staff, who thought I had broken 'the rules'.

I am pleased to see that some flexibility is still allowed!

i issue 7 days on the train and frankly as long as it is a rail photocard (railcard or season and has an obvious number ill issue a 7 day. i dont see the problem

You can also use a London Transport issued photocard just fine. These have numbers in the form of two letters and five numbers.

The problem is, I presume, when he sold the ticket he scanned the Season Photocard's barcode to match the season to the photocard. My railcard had no barcode, and presumeably the number being a different format (and logged in a separate database) couldn't be matched up to a season ticket?
