Season ticket route validity

Hi all - keeping this vague for obvious reasons.

As i understand it, if a journey planner provides an itinerary and a ticket then the ticket is valid regardless of whether the route is intended to be valid. Can this be applied to a season ticket? Ie, can a journey planner itinerary for a single journey make the same route valid for a season ticket? hope that makes sense!

At least in terms of routing, yes. If it tells you to go from A to B to C to D with a ticket marked "VIA WESTWICH", then any season ticket also marked "VIA WESTWICH" will do. Ditto "ANY PERMITTED".

Thanks. Makes sense but there is no via point on the ticket. In fact the route is displayed as '.'

So I can buy a ticket from A to C via London, route '.' The season option has the same route.

The difference between season tickets and single/return tickets is that the former can be used on all permitted routes whereas the latter can only be used on any permitted route. The distinction may not be important, but it gives season tickets more flexibility.

This is a routeing that is only supposed to be used where this is no choice of routes (at least, that was the idea when it was introduced). It was, effectively, intended to mean 'the permitted route' rather than 'any permitted route'.

It's valid, but would be shut down almost immediately if anyone who inspects the ticket and is "in the know" that this is an error, reports it.

If it doesn't work the barriers, the chances of it being reported would increase drastically.

Not quite - if you have a return ticket you can choose one permitted route for the outward journey and another for the return, but with a season ticket you can choose any number of permitted routes in any combination that you choose. Of course, the latter is only different if there are more than two permitted routes!

Presumably it is valid for the whole validity of the ticket (potentially up to 12 months), but a renewal will not have the same validity.

How would one prove validity if it was instantly removed from the journey planner?
