I understand what they do is take the original price, minus whatever ticket you'd have had to buy anyway minus £10 admin fee. Is this right?

On 2/11, I bought a season ticket to run up to the 23/12. One month and 22 days = £496.90

Unfortunately, my contract is ending unexpectedly on November 27th. BUT is this right?

If I cancel it on 27/11, it'll be deemed I've used it for 4 weeks, so 4 weekly tickets (£74.60 per week, total £298.40). (Refund is £496.90 - £298.40 - £10 = £188.50)

If I wait a few days and then cancel, a month will have gone by so wont I then be deemed to have used a month ticket (i.e. £286.50). (So, refund is £496.90 - £286.50 - £10 = £200.40). £12 or so better off.

So I'll be better off waiting a few days? Or is the system clever enough to realise that a month season would be better applied?

Im guessing not and that its a manual calculation done by ticket office to some extent. Not good then if staff at newport are involved!

Yes, they will use the price of the monthly ticket if that is cheaper than a combination of weekly and daily tickets.

I would have thought that the monthly rate would only be used if it were a month or more.

Remember that if you find work which still requires you to travel, you can request a changeover rather than a refund.

The refund rules specifically cover this case

If the charge for a 7-Day Season Ticket is less than the sum of the appropriate daily fares, use the 7-Day Season Ticket rate. If the monthly Season Ticket rate is lower than the sum of the 7-Day Season Ticket rates plus the daily fares appropriate to the period of use, you must use the monthly season ticket rate.

Yes know about changeover. Did it once a few months ago. Nightmare it was.

At first, ticket office staff argued there was no such thing

Ah spot on that clarifies it then. Like I said 4 7 day tickets costs about £12 more than one month.

Still no entirely convinced they won't do it wrong though :(
