Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help. A colleague of mine has a season ticket Huddersfield-Manchester that costs around £190 a month, is there anyway of getting it cheaper? He needs to be in Manchester by around 8.15, and doesn't want to travel on the slow stopping train into Victoria.

Cheers

Getting up earlier!
He needs to be in Manchester by around 8.15, and doesn't want to travel on the slow stopping train into Victoria.
At present he is buying a HUDDERSFIELD - MANCHESTER STNS route ANY PERMITTED ticket which costs £49 a week or £188.20 a month.

He doesn't want to travel on a slow stopping train into Victoria, so the HUDDERSFIELD - MANCHESTER STNS route HEBDEN BRIDGE ticket is no use to him. It costs £40.90 a week or £157.10 a month.

But the cheapest season is the Earlybird. HUDDERSFIELD - MANCHESTER STNS route EARLYBIRD costs £30.40 a week or £116.80 a month. Its validity is

Are they eligible for a railcard?

If so, would it permitted to buy a return every evening with a 16-25 railcard without the minimum fare, then use the return part the following morning? That would be around £40 a week + railcard cost of £26 a year.

This would not work with a 16-25 Railcard except
  • during July and August, when there is no minimum fare, and
  • when travelling on a Virgin train, for a journey for which Virgin set the fare, and using a ticket which is not routed "Virign Trains Only". This does not apply here.
The time restrictions on the use of a 16-25 Railcard apply to the return portion as well as the outward portion.

Whether a surcharge applied to an Anytime ticket for use of the return leg at a restricted time would survive a legal challenge is another matter.
