Am I right in thinking that on-train staff can't issue seasons (monthly or longer)? If so how do you buy a season between two unmanned stations? Even if they have machines they can't issue seasons either. The rules say you must buy a ticket at the first available opportunity but you might not ever have an opportunity.

Is there a manned station inbetween the two unmanned stations?

In my hypothetical example, no. Even so one of the rules (IIRC) is that you shouldn't have to get off a train en-route just to purchase a ticket.

True, but that doesn't mean they can sell them on board either. As above, you'd either have to visit a staffed station first or purchase them on the phone

On train staff can renew Seasons (weekly ones and perhaps longer) provided the passenger presents their Photocard. The Photocard number has to be written on the season. Presumably if you present an existing Photocard you can buy a season for a journey that you have not purchased before.

Photocards can only be issued at Stations for obvious reasons.

But you are under no obligation to do that.

Can I ask, is there a specific journey the OP wishes to travel, or is the question just out of curiosity?

There is a procedure in place for such a situation to ensure passengers are not overcharged. One still needs to hold a valid ticket to travel if there's an opportunity to purchase one.

What obvious reasons? When I used to travel on the Severn Beach line daily pre-Oct 2007 a stock of spare Photocards were carried by the ATE who regularly used to issue weekly season tickets to new customers.

I appreciate that it may well be an uncommon arrangement and/or may no longer take place but I cannot think of a reason why it can not take place, merely ones why it may not take place (having to carry spare Photocards, needing to cut photos to size, time constraints).

Purely hypothetical curiousity. I think my question has been answered by the fact that you can buy seasons over the phone (although thats not an answer if you want to travel now) Making you travel somewhere else to buy a ticket isn't really on.

I don't think buying over the phone as a compulsory method is on either, nor is buying online.

None of these are compulsory purchasing methods, but they're what you'd have to do to obtain that particular ticket I guess. If you got on a train at an unstaffed station and the conductor, for whatever reason, was unable to issue you with a season ticket, then you'd just have to buy another ticket for your current journey.
