Searching for fee on statements

Hello Wise Train People!

I was recently going through bank and credit card statements in preparation for my self-assessment taxes, and I saw a £150 charge that I was pretty sure was train-related. I travel from Broadstairs to London St Pancras, and I have a vague memory of there being a moment when going through the barriers at St. P. when I thought my phone had swiped (as an oyster) instead of presenting my ticket. I was in a big hurry, meant to check later and then forgot.

When doing my taxes and seeing that charge, I made a mental note (noticing a pattern here?) to check on that fine later and see if I could potentially challenge it, given that I did have a train ticket for that day.

But now I can't find the charge again! I can do a search of statements etc. but I am not sure what to search FOR! How do these fees usually appear on statements? What wording should I try?

It does seem a little strange. A contactless journey that hasn't been completed would be at maximum fare, not £150.

Have a search for TfL or Southeastern

If you received a Penalty Fare for some sort of ticketing error that was picked up at the barrier or on board a train (and did not pay it promptly) that would be £100 + the cost of the ticket. If paid promptly - within 21 days I think - that would be reduced to £50 + the costs of the ticket. The Penalty Fares were lower before January 2024 IIRC

An Anytime Day Single Broadstairs to St Pancras is £56
Any Anytime Return is £111.20

Using the High Speed route (ie to St Pancras) - there are many fares cheaper than this as you can see on the full list here

These fares would have been a bit lower before the annual fares increase earlier in the year.

You'd know if you'd been issued a penalty fare though as it must be done on the spot, it's not something that would be done in the background via a missed tap.

What makes you think that? Who did you pay it to?

To search your bank transactions - download the statements in excel format and use the easy "search" function to find the £150.

They have found the charge on their statement, so I'm unsure how searching their statement is going to help?

Hence I suggested he search on the value of £150 initially and then look at the bank narrative.
