What is often forgotten:
Also the Finnish town of Tornio would massively profit from a new train to Haparanda. Right now, Tornio is only served by the Helsinki-Kolari, which does not even operate daily.

Here's a nice article by Raidepuole (hopefully Google Translate works)

Liminka-Oulu double tracking too ... this long overdue and really welcome for a bit more capacity, speed and resiliency; no sign of Liminka station reopening though.

First Finnish electric locomotive visited Haparanda yesterday using live wires... It was Soviet built Class Sr1 no 3008 assisted by a Class Dv12 locomotive.

as a side tangent are there plans to re-open the old Tornio station?, would work as a better location to swap between Diesel and Electric for the Kolari Sleeper and potential to add a carriage or two from Haparanda?

I had presumed that it would be reopened for these new Haparanda trains but maybe not. That would be a shame if it stays closed and the trains pass through without stopping. I can not imagine that it needs much work to reopen. All it needs is a basic platform and i think that still exists.

It's listed in the timetable if I recall correctly, so the Haparanda bound services will call there (but not the Kolari sleeper).

That is good to hear. I am just looking at photos online now and Tornio almost looks like an open station so they have done a great job of keeping it in good condition. The platform even has an electronic departure board despite zero trains calling there. So i think it will be very easy for the Haparanda service to call.

I suppose if the train to Kolari was to call then it would have to reverse which would probably complicate things. Simpler to just keep that service calling at Tornio Itainen only.

Once the new train starts then i presume Tornio to Tornio Itainen will be a record for the closest Finnish railway stations. It is less than 1000 metres. It will probably only take one minute to travel between them. I doubt any passenger would make that journey but i wonder how much VR will charge.

Tornio (Central) station was extensively renovated as part of the recently completed EU-funded project. The platforms were rebuilt and raised, departure screens, lighting and platform furniture were all installed.

Tornio station has been renovated in preparation for the new services. The expected start date is Thursday 20 November 2026 ( https://www.tornio.fi/ajankohtaista...alinen-henkilojunaliikenne-alkaa-vuonna-2026/ ). The budget is for 30 trains per week, ie: 15 to and 15 from - of which it is likely that one Helsinki-Oulu service will be extended to Haparanda.

Night trains will continue on their current routes and not call at Tornio which would require a reverse at Tornio.

As for a Tornio-Tornio-Itäinen price...well, the closest I can find at the moment would be Tornio-Itäinen to Ylitornio on Night Train 269, dep 8h24 arrives 9h12 and costs 9 eur. I notice now that VR no longer sell tickets for services that can be completed within the HSL region, otherwise, Helsinki to Pasila used to be available and IIRC first class was about 16eur single.

later than i expected but still great to see, interrail is booked for April so will miss sadly
my suggestion for the reversal at Tornio was that would be okay of thats where they swapped from Diesel to Electric so would not effect timing as much
going from 1 train each way to 15 is impressve

I would cautiously suggest that is a mistranslation. The budget for FY2026 was agreed on Thursday 20 November 2025. There is no confirmed start date other than "early 2026". VR has previously said they'd need 3-4 months to plan for the service, so we can expect spring or early summer.

I agree. When I change the language to Swedish there is no mention of November. Insted it says that the traffic is expected to start in the beginning of next year.

YLE ran a report today on the connections that will become possible when the line reopens: https://yle.fi/a/74-20199501 (Google Translate is your friend).

Suora henkilöliikenne junalla Suomesta Ruotsiin on vihdoin toteutumassa ensi vuonna.

A straight passenger train connection from Finland to Sweden is finally coming true next year.

What's the source for that?
Source is the allocated track capacity, which was updated yesterday for the next timetable period starting 29th March 2026. Schedules for the service were not in the latest change. The next timetable period after that starts 15th Jun 2026. In Finland we generally have six timetable periods in a full timetable year.

Another source, saying June (but still with some uncertainty): https://www.kauppalehti.fi/uutiset/a/f5732e87-cd03-4f33-98b0-8d422c68f116
The article is behind a login-wall. A bit worrying part (translated): "It is in everyone's interest to have smooth exchange connections across the border. However, the funding decision came so late in Finland that the schedules for this year will probably not be optimal. We will probably be able to have even better exchange connections next year," Hannukainen says.

VR planned the service some time ago and since then Norrtåg timetables have changed. If allocated train paths are used as-is on the Finnish side, there won't be good connections to the Swedish service. Reason behind this is that VR has planned to reuse the stock from trains IC 37 / IC 38 that run Helsinki - Oulu and therefore the planned paths to Haparanda are tied to those trains.

So, are 37/38 extended to Haparanda (and back)?

Suggests, eg: IC37, Helsinki dep 13h20, arr Oulu 19h41 ... then extrapolating from other services, Kemi arr 20h56, Tornio I 21h16, then I guess Tornio 21h21, Haparanda 21h35 ish.
In the other direction IC38 would then leave Haparanda about 7h25, then depart Oulu 9h16 for its usual run down to Helsinki arriving 15h38

Can't see VR overnighting a train in Haparanda, but you could get it back to Kemi to meet the Kemijärvi-Helsinki night train...

Planned overnighting in Oulu. So the train to Haparanda would return to Oulu and then an early morning run from Oulu to Haparanda.

I've compiled a timetable based on currently available open data on both Finnish and Swedish sides. It shows the obvious mismatch of current plans. Norrtåg schedules on the Swedish side were changed just after VR planned their schedules on the Finnish side. Schedules shown on the Finnish side are preliminary and can still change if VR changes plans and applies for a change before the next timetable period. Norrtåg schedules on the Swedish side are pretty much fixed to the stone and VR as an operator can't do much about it. This is not optimal.

For Haparanda station timings are in the Swedish timezone which is an hour difference from the Finnish timezone.

Days:
M-L = Monday - Saturday
M-S = Monday - Sunday
L = Saturday
S = Sunday

IC401/408 look to be timed to connect with PYO269/276 at Oulu so would work well for Helsinki-Haparanda-Lulea Travel

Why would they randomly skip out Tornio Itainen on two services (one in each direction). It seems an odd choice especially as there are very few other services there (just the one a day in each direction Kolari service). Why not just make all trains call there. I would be interested to know what their logic is for that.

Thanks, so my timing guesses weren't too far off

IC 37 connects with IC407 and IC408 connects with IC38, *or* IC37/38 change numbers and continue with the same stock which would be interesting as number changes like that aren't common (if at all IIRC) for a through service and IC37/38 usually run as 6 or 7 wagons - so that's a big train for that service after Oulu.

That is an interesting point. Thought it was weird too when I analysed the open data. It might be a planning error.

Looking at that planned timetable: thats only for the 2 L= LÖR=SATURday trains.
In Scandinavia in general I remember-compared with usual practice ´in other continent EUR´ -that the weekend-off seriously starts from around noon SATurdays and that its often more closed/wired up as even SUNdays late.
For the nailsplitters: yes, of course I do know FINland is very strcitly taken not Scandinavia. But swedish is much more accessible language as finnish for us. And I understand jpi is from there so might even know better!
My very first ScanRail then 3-weeks trip, staying in ´Vandrarshem´=youth hostels, was going via that route in railbuses from Boden via that border into Finland-which still had its own currency Markka then. Plenty of overnight trips to save on cost in just seats.

It probably has something to do with the 10-minute turnaround at Haparanda; if it stopped at Tornio-Itäinen as well, it'd have very little turnaround time. It can't return any later, either, because it runs just ahead of S 28 from Kemi to Oulu, allowing passengers to connect into that to continue to Helsinki.

PYO 262 also calls at Tornio-Itäinen about an hour after IC 406 would, so it's not that big of a problem, especially with both trains calling at Tornio as well. Tornio-Itäinen was the 25th least-used station in the country in 2024, with 5770 passengers, so I don't think it's going to be of particular loss to anyone.
Thanks, so my timing guesses weren't too far off

It might be that IC 407/408 will be formed off of IC 65, and that IC 401/402 will then go on to form IC 63. Or perhaps, with Oulu Nokela becoming a more and more important depot, they change the stock rotation to have a short(er) rake up there for an extra day (instead of it going straight back to Helsinki).

I imagine that they would like to use a possujuna (3-car rake, no restaurant car), but getting that up to Oulu in passenger service would be virtually impossible, because all the Oulu trains need more capacity than that (and a restaurant!) and I don't think Nokela would want to start reforming trains up there.
Once the new train starts then i presume Tornio to Tornio Itainen will be a record for the closest Finnish railway stations.
The closest stations in the country are Huopalahti and Valimo, with a distance of 695 metres between them.
It is less than 1000 metres. It will probably only take one minute to travel between them.
The distance between Tornio and Tornio-Itäinen is 1349 metres, and considering that the speed limit is mostly 35 km/h, it will probably take 3 minutes to travel between them.
I doubt any passenger would make that journey but i wonder how much VR will charge.
VR's minimum ticket price for long-distance trains is 3 euro, so it will almost certainly cost 3 euro.
Source is the allocated track capacity, which was updated yesterday for the next timetable period starting 29th March 2026. Schedules for the service were not in the latest change. The next timetable period after that starts 15th Jun 2026. In Finland we generally have six timetable periods in a full timetable year.
Any changes for the bext timetable period must be submitted by 24 April (which is quite late compared to usual), but passenger train timetables are generally not changed in that way during the year. I expect that the services will only be properly retimed come December (which is when the new timetable year starts).
For the nailsplitters: yes, of course I do know FINland is very strcitly taken not Scandinavia. But swedish is much more accessible language as finnish for us. And I understand jpi is from there so might even know better!
Although Finland is not technically part of Scandinavia, it is part of the Nordics as well as Fennoscandia. There's an excellent CGP Grey video on the matter here.

The way I see it, VR isn't going to let that subsidy slip away. I'm pretty confident we'll see a cross-border passenger train before December 2026. I think the main hurdle right now is just figuring out the logistics around the timetable and getting the right rolling stock.

An Oulu–Tornio–Haparanda train is really only viable if there are good connections at both ends of the route (Haparanda–Luleå on the Swedish side, and Oulu–Helsinki on the Finnish side). That basically requires a midday train between Oulu and Haparanda. Starting too early from either end just won't line up with those connecting routes.

If I had to guess, VR will probably kick things off with a single token service across the border—maybe not even daily, but just on the weekends.

looking at google maps, did they remove the standard gauge bay platform at Tornio?

if Norrtag could add Batteries to the X52's, feel like it would have been an easy extension of the Lulea-Haparanda Service to extend too Tornio
