They're good for local journeys, but for longer distances ones, finding the correct train can be a royal pain. If you hold an Advance for a train that either follows another service fairly closely (in which case it shows up only after the train it follows departs, possibly only for a couple of minutes) or that gets overtaken (in which case it never shows up), those screens are worse than useless.

There should always also be a more conventional display showing the trains in order of departure.

From what I've seen the board at Man Picc has 3 lines for Stoke, showing the next XC, VT and NT services. I'd assume other destinations are similar (or is that why Sheffield passengers always get the NT stopper?).

Leeds has a display of next fastest trains to about 30-40 destinations

Theres only a very few times of day when theres insufficient space to list all the destinations available from Leeds. Principally, I think, when there are departures to beyond Plymouth *and* beyond Edinburgh due.

Huddersfield now also has an A-Z departures board - probably a very sensible idea when you think of the changes to calling patters that apply from that station in particular.
