I was visiting the home of a younger colleague than I who assists me with the Charity Consultancy work we do and he showed me a problem on his desktop computer system that has Windows 7 (64 bit) which appears to have all the Service Packs installed. When he wishes to make a posting on certain websites, when the digital mouse is in the correct position ready for the text matter, the screen position suddenly jumps down about three lines, stays like that for about half a second, then jumps back up to the normal position then everything returns to normal.

I used his computer to access this website to see for myself and when I tried to make a new posting on a thread, the very same thing happened to me. It was fine once matters had been allowed to take their course, but every time I tried to access a new thread, I was faced with the same dilemma.

Has anyone any advice that I can pass on to my colleague?

Sometimes adblockers can have a similar effect, an ad starts to load but is stopped by the adblocker. If he's using an adblocker try turning it off.

What web browser (and version) is he using?

I should have submitted that information to you in my original posting and only the 64 bit was mentioned there and not the browser name. His computer is using Internet Explorer 11 (64 bit) for Windows 7 as he realised he was on an earlier version of Internet Explorer until a couple of months ago.

He has, for some reason best known to himself, taken a dislike to both Chrome as a browser and Windows 10. He knows that I use Chrome as he has seen my computer system when he visits me. I think that I mentioned that RailUK Forums is one such affected website, as I said in my original posting.

Does he have a wheel on his mouse? I have an older one here which unless you leave it exactly on one of its detents, it will randomly click back or forth to the next one, which by default will move the screen by three lines up or down. Often this is triggered by moving my hands away from the mouse to the keyboard.

He has a brand-new Logitech M545 wireless mouse with a wheel, which he bought in order to try to resolve the problem, but to no avail.

So he hasn't actually tried using a different browser?

Is the original mouse a wired or wireless one?

It was a wired mouse that came with the package 18 months ago.

Well, he knows that I use Chrome and use Firefox as my back-up, but no, he will not change.

I get "jumping websites" in both IE and Chrome. Once I have my new computer on Saturday I'll see if introducing Adblocker makes it any more noticeable or not...

Then chances are he is stuck with the glitch.

The tried and true method of fixing issues with Internet Explorer is to use a different browser and only if the issue happens on all other alternatives go searching for the cause.

Multiple browsers will happily co-exist so if he really likes IE he can use it for most sites and only switch to an alternative for ones that are problematic.

I have suggested that he installs Adblock Plus (free download) to see if that helps as it is said to be able to be used with Internet Explorer.

******************************************************************************************************

It was past midnight when we eventually returned home from our Monday visit to Matlock Bath and to Ashbourne and there was a message on the ansaphone to say that by having installed Adblock Plus, the problem of my colleague has now been solved. The matter of his back-up browser is now cleared by his taking up my suggestion of using Chrome for that facility.

On behalf of both of us, we thank forum members for their helpful suggestions.
