Hail! <D
That was a labour government following Beeching, not the Tories.
It makes no odds which Government was in power at the time...Not a single one of them give two shakes about public transport.

The main bunch want us all to stay in our cars so that we keep paying über-inflated taxes on fuel, thus lining their greedy, fat, worthless pockets and extorting us like the Nithings they are. <(<(<(
The Green party aren't nearly as bad...But only because - As part of their agenda - Petrol/diesel vehicles would be banned outright, we'd all be forced onto bicycles, and bEMUs (Battery-EMUs/Locos) would be introduced to replace Diesel rolling-stock!:lol::razz:

Personally - If there's one thing I'd love to have someday - It'd be a fifteen minute "trolley dash" around the Houses of Parlament with either my twin-headed Axe, or a long-bladed Chainsaw. Either way, the end result would be the ultimate test for the alleged cleaning powers of Cillit Bang...;)<D

Farewell... <D

But,.... public transport (generally) requires some form of subsidy (or costs so much that the very poorest in society are excluded), but cars bring in tax income. So reducing r use and increasing public transport requires an increase in taxation somewhere else, or taxing cars very heavily.

Google external costs, a simplistic but incorrect argument and economically illiterate.
