The first steam trains will travel along the new Borders Railway line in September, ScotRail has confirmed.

The 60009 Union of South Africa will haul the service between Edinburgh Waverley and Tweedbank on 10 September, just four days after the new railway opens.

It is one of six remaining LNER Class A4 steam locomotives in the UK, which were built in Doncaster in 1937.

The train will run through the Borders three days a week, for six weeks..

Are these reguolar service trains, or railtours which reqire different (more expensive tickets). What about the Inverness to Carlisle runs in June mentioned in the article? Are these railtours, or scheduled services?

also of note is the article saying there are 6 A4's left in the UK. I wonder where the other two are? Box tunnel strategic reserve? haha

How do you book the bloody tickets? I have searched for 10 minutes and cannot find anything on the ScotRail site apart from the Borders steam runs! No wonder nobody is booking them!!

Steam Dreams site also tells you to ring the 'Booking Office', but if you scroll down has a sort of booking facility.

Why didn't they put in a run around or turntable to turn the steam engine? After all its a regular service :I'm not being serious:

Steam Dreams were the booking agent for the DBS-worked charters already run by Scotrail so there's no reason why the same couldn't apply here.

On a hypothetical note, how much would it cost to put in a turntable or run around?

It would almost certainly need to be a turntable to avoid the speed restriction on tender first running, and it seems Network Rail spent £1.6m on installing the refurbished turntable at York which should give an idea of the cost.

Shame SR don't operate the Sleeper still, eh, could have got on at Watford Junction at 0010 and gone up from there to Edinburgh for it
