Scotrail Trainee Drivers (Ongoing)

The number of drivers being recruited is actually 123 according to our ASLEF rep, and that was the number originally announced back in May. Possibly 23 places set aside for transfers, qualified etc.

There are too many variables in this to be honest. Some TOCs like xc only take qualifieds. Other TOCs take a mix. VTEC and vtwc, who have good headline salaries could only take qualifieds, but while they do , they do sometimes take trainees. A lot of other TOCs get fewer qualifieds applying and generally only when they want to move for personal reasons and these TOCs have to take in trainees.

However, in this sr recruitment campaign its a mixed bag. Any qualified drivers are probably moving for personal reasons, as though the sr salary has improved it used to be bottom of the league for tocs. There are only 3 TOCs in Scotland, VTEC,vtwc and SR and then the foc depots, so while there are definetyky some qualifeds applying its not that many I'd imagine. To add to the mix is, I'd imagine, some sort of deal between abellio and the Scottish government, possibly in terms of funding for trainee roles,but this is speculation.

With 100 roles and 22135 applicants it's a lottery all round....

Granted there wont be many qualified drivers from other tocs in scotland applying...foc with a few areas in scotland finishing up they could be (as in previous uears with Falkland yard etc) brought in to the passenger side.

however my point remains that a SR will take a qualified driver with good record over a trainee evey time

There is no deal anymore. 10 or so years ago the Scottish Govt paid the training costs of a trainee driver, hence the large number of external candidates. This was due to the Scottish Goverment wanting lots of new services but Firstgroup being unwilling to absorb the training costs to allow it. They didn't pay the costs of an internal so there was a big sway towards external drivers. My training course for example was all external. That is no longer the case but an internal is still more expensive as the person retains the salary of the grade they are employed at, rather than the trainee rate. They also have to be replaced in their current role. Externals still have a very good chance - they are cheaper -and also very often bring very good skills and work ethic to the role depending on experience.

I think Bop-it was particularly useful for one of the tests in the old style assessments which were discontinued late in 2013, however I do think its a good game to sharpen your reactions which can only help. Another game which I would recommend is available (free) for your smartphone is called "Flow" it basically gets you to join up coloured dots and as you progress the patterns get harder. Neither of these games simulate any of the assessments but they do get the old grey matter working.

Nope, they did say on their Facebook page on 9th oct saying it would be another 4-6 weeks before they let all successful candidates know

Some that have passed assessments already have interview dates. Not sure if they're doing all applicants per depot at the 1 time even though their start dates will be staggered or if they'll be doing batches per depot. Sift is still going so don't give up hope. Not heard of anyone who has previous assessment passes being contacted yet and I'd imagine a few of them will make the sift so there's a while to go yet before it's time to think you've been unsuccessful.

Well done! When is it?

Out of curiosity, what is the necessary experience/qualifications for a Train Driver Manager? Is it the natural progression route from Train Driver?

Also, what's the pay like?

That's the 5 week stage now reached - now hearing that some applicants are already at train driver managers interview I think it's safe to say if we haven't heard by now we can presume that we won't be hearing anything from here on in

Isn't that split into the following:

1 day for stage 1 assessment
1 dat for DM interview
1 day for stage 2 assessment?

PATIENCE!
It has been pointed out numerous times, that Scotrail wrote on their FB page on 9th Oct that it will be 4-6 weeks before all candidates are informed.
