It's crazy, I have heard horror stories of trainees being tripled up with a DI or spending months doing front end turns because of no DI available.

I've seen three trainees at the front of a train to Kirkcaldy taking turns! And cab turns very common.

That's not great news sadly in the DMI I was told I could get a place April/November if I was lucky that seem extremely unlikely then. Sucks waiting to here from them trying to keep motivated going to your current job

Unfortunately unless they make the DI role more attractive this is only going to get worse. As I said up thread so many (myself included) have quit due to poor quality/arrogant/disinterested candidates and all the responsibility on the DI licence rather than the trainee. There is also a large amount of paperwork the DI has to complete, having 2 or more trainees at the same time results in hours of work. Something has to change.

Nope... just got my rejection email.
You could well get on a course per se, because it will take about 3 and a half/4 months before you are signed off from the training academy.
The issue is getting a practical handling DI at a depot. I believe they are trying to get more folk to do it, but it's if folk feel comfortable making that step up. Because if something goes wrong, it's the DIs license that any operational incident is held against, while you are training.
Yeah, I can't see many DIs accepting that tbh. I am also surprised at ASLEF allowing it, I expected better from them tbh.
Like I say, it goes back to unrealistic recruiting expectations from ScotGov/Transport Scotland.
It won't all be sunshine and roses with it being back in 'public hands', having worked for public sector controlled organisations in the past, they generally overspend and make silly decisions, due to pressure from incompetent ministers/politicians.
The worst thing about this, is that myself and likely a lot of others, would love the chance to get into training. To hear that the recruitment drive has chosen candidates who aren't so thankful just compounds the frustration in having to wait.
This could also be part of the training school, they do a lot of main line training trains.

I was wondering if anyone could post any links or point me in the right direction for practice material for the trainee train driver assessment. Any pointers on what to expect, how the stages work and what to prepare for. And what kind of questions they ask at the interview stage MMI and depot interview. Any pointers or tips would be appreciated.

Hi all, first time poster.
Im just waiting on confirmation of my assessment date. I know its going to be in the 1st 2 weeks of February.
With the process changed with that AON test being 1st. Does anyone know what the next step is comprised of?
I have been practicing dots tets, symbols tests, and the dials as per the pra rice materials they gave. I cant do the perception test properly as I obviously have seen the pictures for more than a second. Does anyone have any suggestions where or how to practice on that?

Classroom training for the initial weeks of the course is at Atrium Court. The traction bit can be at other locations depending on the type of train and availability of instructors.
The new online tests.
It consists of a psychometric test, a concentration test, a reaction test, a monitoring test and a logical reasoning test. Its all timed I think it's used to whittle down applicants easier.

Yeah, I heard someone in a bothy today saying a lot of internal applicants at one of the depots have failed these.
Im 1 of the lucky ones that got through. But genuinely I know more that failed than got through.

Re the pictures, its the same things you're looking for in each picture : pedestrians, bikes and motorbikes (think these 2 are clumped together, can't mind for sure) , vehicles, traffic lights and road signs.
I bought practice material for this but every picture they asked for something different, and when you seen the image you didnt know what you were looking for...1 eg was something like What was the letter on the 3rd L column of the car park, next Q what was the helmet colour of the 3rd cyclist, so I found that difficult, but possibly useful as the actual test is easier in comparison.
So, what I also did was driving past end of roads, glance up them and see if I could see any of the above mentioned things. I found this really helped, but obv watch the road in front lol.
With this test , don't guess. Just tick the things you know you saw for sure.

Yeah one of the internal applicants showed part of the test. Lots of tiny green dots moving around in a black circle and you're somehow supposed to count them. It looked very difficult.
