scotrail phone interview

Hi i'm Graham and got a Scotrail interview on Mon 25/02/08 fot trainee train driver can anybody give me any advice on how to get past this.

They are going to ask me "whats my motivation is for the job" and "whats my understanding of the job"

Has anybody been through this lately and got through any advice welcome

I went through a telephone interview last year for a part-time job (which I didn't get in the end), and there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

A few key tips I'll give you (which applies to all telephone interviews) are...

*Speak clearly and confidently (smiling is picked up through the tone of your voice, which also helps)
*Take your time in answering and don't be afraid to ask to repeat the question
*Plan in advance what you are going to say if you know what you are going to be asked (in your case, motivation and understanding of the job)

From the people I know who work in the industry a good tip is not to go on about having an interest in railways. Certainly mention it, but don't go on about too much. Someone having a passing interest would probably be seen as a bonus, but someone who sounded like they spent all of their spare time at the end of a platform would probably end up the reject pile before they'd even put the phone down.

Yeah it seems that they don't want/like to employ someone who harps on about their interest to a degree that it is irrelevant. Would they like it if you knew about their operation as a whole and their future plans?

Don't appear to be the stereotypical trainspotter, but also don't be afraid to show that you have an understanding and an interest in the railway as a whole as believe me it does help you (IME you tend to find out who the fellow cranks are a bit quicker that way!)
