Are the managers and supervisors micro-managers in Scotrail, Transpennine Express?
Or are they just like every other company?
Elaborate?
Are you left to get on with things?
Or are you delegated tasks which are later checked by your manager or supervisor?
A micro-manager is someone who consistently checks people's work and who controls and/or directs what people have or are doing with excessive attention to minor details.
I just want to know if you are left to your own devices?
But this probably depends on the role
My experience of working for FirstGroup for over 5 years - 3,000 generals to each troop. I know of few (sensible) employees who would disagree.
(Oh drat - Can't we criticise FirstGroup? They running our site now? This post deleted too for Reason 15-Irrellevent like the last one 2 hours ago??! Any reason?)
It actually depends on the company more so than the role - anyone in safety critical work are performance monitored on a regular basis it depends on the company if they prefer micro management - I hate it to be honest because the people who carry out this type of management are usually totally unaware of what it is like on the front line and in some cases never even worked in the role that they are managing
...Firstgroup middle manager for almost three years.I'm not criticising anyone.
How can you criticise something you know nothing about

From being in a managerial role that is has frontline customer facing staff from cleaners to ticket office staff its quite imperative that I check up on what they are doing.
Do you want staff who dont know what ticekt you want or short change you or are rude to you? Do you want dirty stations that never seem to have any TLC done to them no matter how much you pay for your ticket?
I have to make sure that my staff and myslef compile to all these things through ongoing supervision and auditing process. And that includes attention to minor detail. Because I know if I didnt and let it slip then standards would slip then there would be more complaints from you, Our dear passenger. So guess what? I have to 'Micro-manage' as you have outlined above.
Sorry there guv'nor. Though Its worth noting I dont work for first group, but im guessing its the same for all TOCs.
All managers are different, ranging from decent to terrible regardless of TOC.
Can't be fairer then that can I?
That's exactly it. Though much of the time, 'terrible manager' means, "i was only following orders". A good manager, in my view, questions bad decision making from above AND below. It's not a job for everyone, and my hat off to you Clip, for doing it. Also to you 185, as i know exactly what you mean!
