Scotrail HSTs trip plan and ticketing

Hi all - not sure if this is best in trip reports or more of a specific question about ticketing - but here goes - all thoughts about varied aspects of it are welcome

I'm planning a few days in Scotland and intend do use a Spirit of Scotland Rover / pass to travel on the HSTs that operate the I7C services. I want to use the rover so if there are diagrame changes to eg 170s I can just change my plans and travel on a different HST service whenever possible.

I'll have to travel on weekdays and I'll be based in Glasgow for this.

Routes:
I reckon I can easily work out the routes and times of the HSTs via the info on the Scotrail website that lists the services they are supposed to operate, (https://www.scotrail.co.uk/plan-your-journey/stations-and-facilities/on-train-catering) the indication on the column headings on the pdf Timetables, and of course on the day by checking Real Time Trains for what set is allocated to a train service

I'd like to cover as much route mileage as I can, enjoying the scenery and also the trains.

But I would be interested if there are particular HST operated services that take a more unusual route than others that it is worth knowing about? I would then try to work that into my plan

Also anywhere in particular that people might recommend to break a journey on a route for an hour or so (eg good pub or cafe at or adjacent a station for example) - even if continuing in the same direction - either to sample another set, or just stretch legs and get a bit of fresh air

Ticket:
Spirit of Scotland looks like a Std class only pass?

However, I see the 1st class carriages look like the superb ex GWR 1st class seating and I'd like to enjoy that on at least some of the runs

What are the standard class carriage interiors like comfort wise? EG seating comfort, table seats and their alignment with windows etc?

is there a buffet catering trolley in Standard class? (some of the runs would be quite long ones so likely to want some refreshment potentially)

The 1st class 'food' offer with ticket looks basic to say the least. I'm OK with that so long as I know what to expect and can thus plan accordingly for food to have with me when I board

How busy do the services get? - eg at peak times would they be packed or even at peak times is there plenty of seating available (should reservations be made if desired or is not worth the bother?)

Upgrading to 1st class

The Scotrail website says you can do this for £15. Presumably that is OK for a Spirit of Scotland ticket holder?

I assume this is like a weekend first style upgrade that you pay on board - is that correct?

But an upgrade that is available on any train any day of the week - is that correct?

Is it per journey or per train (I mean if you were travelling Glasgow to Aberdeen, got on and paid £15, but then broke your journey for an hour in Perth say, rejoining a later HST, would you then pay another £15? (£30 total) But if you stayed on the same train all the way from Glasgow to Aberdeen you would only pay £15 total)

all responses gratefully received, including answers to questions I have not thought of asking!

If you’re not on HSTgen.co.uk you may find it worthwhile as it usually has the daily HST set allocations posted. There’s also the current HST diagrams posted on there.

The ScotRail timetables are not foolproof in showing what is HST worked: whilst the I7C indicator is reliable, it doesn’t show on the handful of HST turns between Inverness and Aberdeen.

Thanks for that - will check HST gen

Yes, I'd realised the health warning on the timetables by comparing what they say and a typical days actual service as per RTT - where there are enough clues easy to see to work out what is supposedly happening.
And Inverness - Aberdeen is a route I'm very keen to do by HST - ideally in both directions - so takes some careful planning if based in Glasgow and want to get to / from the route also by HST

By my reckoning the weekday HST service on that route is:
Inverness departures: 0454, 0549, 1239, 1720.
Aberdeen departures: 0614, 1341, 2200.

Thanks - those were the ones I reckoned too (ruling out the morning ones on the basis I could not get there early enough to travel on them)

I'm planning something similar a week Sunday:
1017 DBL - ABD (1234)
1524 ABD - INV (1749)
1852 INV - STG (2136)
Its the same stock I believe so no good if it's additional haulage your after, for me sight-seeing, yellow-penning and plenty of time for refreshment breaks along the way :)
Also on SoS rover

I guess you can’t miss connections if it’s the same stock!

I could do with some views on the ticketing and first class question. Maybe I need to post on fares advice forum?

either that or a 158 the whole way lol
sorry can't help with the ticketing but someone said on here recently that 1st class can be wedged with yanks in the summer - particularly from EDB

Just looking at that move, they are all HST but the first train does not work the second (the first set works 1T82 1334 to Glasgow), so it is a different set. 1H35 1524 ABD-INV is formed off the set from 1A52 1232 from Inverness. 1H35 does indeed then form 1B62 1852 to Edinburgh on arrival at Inverness.

I can imagine - and I guess if they already have 1st class tickets then they get preference over someone with an upgrade request.

But if they want upgrades too I'm pretty sure I can beat people from the 'door to my seat of choice' Olympic sport :) when boarding at train's origin anyway.

£15 any day, any time, to upgrade. It’s a great deal and I’ve never had issues finding a seat. In fact I’ve never had to share a table!

If it's mileage you're after, I followed an 879 mile itinerary based in Glasgow a few weeks ago.

Sound like the info I need. Thanks

No worries. I strongly recommend the Edinburgh - Aberdeen journey through out sat on the right hand side. Some fantastic coastal views and the 2 bridges. Have done this route a few times now and it is one where I work just a little and enjoy the views a lot.

Perth - Inverness has some magical sections too. If do you Aberdeen - Inverness, the Keith is a nice town stopover. There is also a really excellent fish and chip shop at Dyce station.

If you are up for sharing that it would be informative
1A29 Glasgow QS 0551 - Portlethen 0829
1T22 Portlethen 0846 - Stirling 1049
1A39 Stirling 1108 - Aberdeen 1328
1T42 Aberdeen 1346 - Stirling 1547
1A49 Stirling 1607 - Stonehaven 1755
1T58 Stonehaven 1801 - Dundee 1854
1A53 Dundee 1911 - Aberdeen 2032
1B98 Aberdeen 2106 - Edinburgh Waverley 2330

(1R49 Edinburgh Waverley 2345 - Glasgow QS 0037) - 385 to get back to base.

926m 15ch, of which 878m 74ch are by HST. Plenty of scope for enroute re-planning if set swaps occur.
