Hello everyone , i am a mechanic/engineer by trade and have worked with the same company for 7 years now.

I started looking for a different career path one that gives me opportunity to move across an industry sector and up eg into management roles or across into other roles within the same employer as my current one , your stuck where you are with no opportunity to grow responsibility, wage, or face different challenges.

I saw Scotrail were advertising for engineering/shunting roles and Engineering Grade A across various depots, spoke to a few members of staff about how they started as a fitter and are now management or started as a shunter and now a full time driver etc and thought this sounds like the place for me.

I applied at the end of August for an engineering/shunting role , carried out the online tests , attended the assessment day for the psychometric tests and had my interview with two managers last week.
I passed all tests and my interview was extremely positive i was in there for over two hours he even said "i cant tell you here if you are through but put it this way you are in with a fighting chance here" i was the last candidate to be interviewed for this role as well apparently.

I am absolutely devasted to receive an email yesterday stating that i have been successful in the process however there are not enough positions available and will be held in a holding pool for up to 6 months.
Only two days prior to this email they put up an advert for shields depot shunting team for external recruitment so i put in an application for this as well.

My two questions are is my hopes scuppered or should i keep "checking in every few weeks"

has anyone been in a similar situation ?

and

The engineering grade A role states they require an HNC/HND in engineering but now i have seen it also says : "relevant experience will be considered" i was hesitant to apply at first but being a light commercial, car and motorcycle mechanic for the last 11 years i'd assume that gives me a solid background to put my name forward for this ?

Thanks all

Unfortunately you won't be considered for an A grade position at shields as its E.M.U maintenance.
Cokerhill would be the depot if you want to be a Fitter.
With regards to the B grade/ shunter you have more of a chance.

Management positions are pretty much a progressive role. You need to progress through several grades to be successful

Thanks for your reply , management wise I meant progress on future as there's no opportunity for that in my current role , also the ability to move across like become full time driver or other roles is what attracts me as well.

I think the A grade engineering roles were for shields and Haymarket.
