Scotrail disruption

Scotrail have suspended all direct services between Aberdeen and Glasgow / Edinburgh, though the local trains are still running, with a 40mph speed restriction north of Carnoustie. This kicked in yesterday and will just till Monday.

Part of me feels it’s a bit over the top, certainly ant the moment the weather is wet and grey but not extreme, and I wonder how much is a reaction to the Carmont accident and perhaps a desire not to use the HST’s during poor weather? This said, LNER has also suspended services.

....in which case it will be a Network Rail restriction, rather than a ScotRail-initiated one, probably based on the medium-range weather forecast. The TOCs will have suspended their long distance services because of the unmanageable delays to returning services, traincrew and unit diagram disruption caused by the speed restriction that has been imposed.

I think what they've done actually makes sense, it both keeps longer distances services running reliability, whilst keeping a few connections up north for those who really need to travel. I'd say this is a pretty good balance between safety, reliability and connectivity.

I think the ground is still pretty waterlogged after last week's rainfall.

While the weather is not as bad as last week, the ground is still waterlogged or flooded. Which in turn has knock on effects on the railway (slopes more liable to fail, increased chance of flooded cuttings, etc).

Given the choice between no service or a slow trundle, I'm happy to put up with the slow trundle (and am actually doing so right now especially at that rare beast, the lesser spotted Scotrail catering trolley is out and about).

I was on the up Highland Chieftain yesterday between Edinburgh and York.

When I arrived at Waverley, at about 1045, the 1028 ex Aberdeen to Kings Cross hadn’t arrived and would eventually leave just over an hour late.

The 1050 left at 1121 and my 1119 at 1142. All these trains lost time further south- at one point we spent about ten minutes waiting to enter York as southbound trains were queuing signal to signal with two LNER trains ahead of us and a Grand Central and TPE behine us.

Yesterday I travelled from Inverness to Edinburgh on the Chieftain. There was a 40mph limit from about Struan to Stanley Jcn. The guard sounded quite to enjoy announcing it was providing the only direct service from Inverness to Edinburgh of the day.

I think they’re listed on the Scotrail website. The 11.57 Aberdeen to Inverness had one today.

I see the weather warning has now been extended to Monday so there could be another day of this disruption.

My 09.52 LNER train from Aberdeen to Kings Cross has been cancelled for tomorrow, Monday 30th. Speed limits have been lifted but I guess stock is out of place. LNER have said there’s no ticket acceptance and have only offered the 14.52 train instead, which gets me into London too late. I can get the earlier Scotrail train to Edinburgh and use my LNER ticket from there but I guess there’s no way for me to claim that fare back?
