Scotrail disruption today (10/12/22)

Myself and my partner got caught up in a huge amount of disruption today travelling between Glasgow and Edinburgh on Scotrail. Trains were cancelled left right and centre when we eventually got to Waverly and it seemed worse when we tried to leave.

I know there was some disruption because of a points failure at Newbridge which got resolved at 11ish but the vast majority of cancellations throughout the day were due to a shortage of train crew. Does anyone know the reason for this? While I know there's Network Rail strikes next week, I thought industrial action on Scotrail was resolved? Surely the disruption as Newbridge didn't have that wide of an impact throughout the day? (Though I'm happy to be corrected)

There were several other incidents throughout the day as well, though only two might've had any bearing on things in the Central Belt.

There seems to have been today and tomorrow it seems a severe amount of cancellations because of a shortage of train crew. In particular on the Edinburgh - Glasgow via shotts and the few carstairs services. It has been fine for a few weeks but has seemed to have got really bad this weekend, I wonder what’s caused this as ScotRail industrial relations were meant to be sorted? A 2 hourly services on the shotts line tomorrow and already there are 4 hour gaps showing between services because of cancellations.

The Newbridge points failure lasted through to mid-afternoon. With trains on the main line to Glsgow taking anything up to twice their normal times. With a rather large queue to clear the congestion.

Newbridge is one of those unfortunate locations where a signalling or points failure quickly snowballs into disruption all over.

Can't have been easy to clear the backlog quickly, even with the reduced timetable compared to 2019.

Correct it is. My point was it’s already a 2 hour service on a Sunday, but at some points tomorrow (today) it is now a 4 hour gap between services.

Have just checked again, there’s now a 6 hour gap between services.

Markedly fewer staff volunteering for weekend overtime on the approach to Christmas might have been a factor, compounding the disruption and lengthening the time taken to recover?

The disruptions also caused issues on the fife circle with 4 trains in a row being cancelled to Glenrothes/Cowdenbeath. I was trying to travel to Dunfermline city with the last train before the cancellations running at 1148 and the next one not being until 1518. I was intending to travel on the 1418 to Cowdenbeath however it was indeed cancelled at about 1410. The 1248 & 1350 to Glenrothes and the 1418 to Cowdenbeath cited train crew issues for their cancellation but the 1231 to Cowdenbeath had no reason given. I ended up travelling on the 1431 LNER service to INK which also caused some confusion as it was duplicated on the departure boards in Waverley with one of them saying it was cancelled and station announcements telling us the 1431 service to Aberdeen was cancelled with the next LNER service to Aberdeen also departing at 1431 from the same platform as the cancelled service!
