Just wondering what the career prospects are for Conductors with Scotrail?
I assume there are opportunities to move onto driving but is it mainly dependant on where you're based regarding the frequency of chances to progress and are there often internal opportunities for driving? Are there any other career progressions other than driving?

Any experience or knowledge greatly received. Pm me if preferred.

You get fist dibs at the internal vacancy list so you can apply for lots of things like conductor instructor, team manager, training school vacancies as well as loads of temporary secondment. And driver too obviously. Plenty of places to go.

Thanks for that information. Is there a minimum length of service new conductors must do before being able to apply for other departments/vacancies?

No, but you will need experience especially if going for a drivers job. You would be expected to perform at the highest level at interview when questioned on rules and regulations/procedures etc. An internal interview can be harder than an external candidate as they are not expected to know anything about operations, whereas guards are.

Yes, 6 months in your new position (it's usually listed in the job description stating this).
This has to be 6 months in your new role. It doesn't matter, for example, if you have worked for Scotrail for X amount of years in a certain role and then become a conductor for 2months and a position becomes available for a trainee driver role. The previous employment time for the company doesn't count as it must be 6 months in the new role. This has happened numerous times and HR won't budge on the rule as it's down in black and white.

Unless you're an apprentice. Plenty of them getting other jobs in under 6 months after getting their "full time job" after finishing their apprenticeship. Example: Apprentice gets Permanent TE job less than 4 months ago has just got a Conductors position - This has happened at my depot in the last 2 weeks. Didnt go down too well with other staff - including the person who trained above apprentice and didnt even get an interview for the conductor job.
