Morning everyone, new to the forum! So apologies if this has already been asked.

I recently passed my assessment centre last week for Conductor at Edinburgh. Next stage is interview and if successful with that it’s medical.

I did some google searches and can’t seen to find much information on what the interview will be like and learning more about the role of Conductor itself, I do have a general idea but have a more understanding would be great.

I also was wondering if Conductors are given set routes? Or is it a mix of any route.

Where is your interview and for which depot? I would visit the depot before your interview to get as much info from a CTM or other conductors about routes, traction and other such things.

Hi, it’s for Edinburgh and that is where my interview will take place with the CTM next week.

Will hopefully reach out to see some conductors / maybe CTM on my days off to try get as much info as I can for next week.

You will be expected to learn and work certain routes (known as “signing” them) as part of training - usually the second half of conductor training. This usually takes several weeks at the very least, with an assessment at the end of each route learning period; sometimes it can take a small number of months. Unlike shifts themselves, which can often be swapped mutually, knowledge of a specific set of routes is mandatory and determined by crew management.

Different depots, and different levels of seniority at larger depots, will usually have different route knowledge. This can change every so often, so only those with fairly recent information will be able to help. (Over time, staff may end up retaining knowledge of obscure bits of track which are useful for diversion, but not mandatory for new entrants; do not worry about all the quirks yet.)

Hi folks,
New to the forum here but should soon be a conductor on the Edinburgh line too. Just finished my medical! Does anyone know if there's staff parking at Waverley? We're thinking of moving to Prestonpans which seems nice and not that far away but wondering if I'd be expected to bus or train depending on the time of shift or do folk usually drive?

It's a question for your CTM. Yeah there is a car park that staff use. But you would need to be issued with a car park pass and I believe there is/was a waiting list

Staff use New Street car park. We are issued with passes although as already stated there is a waiting list. As soon as your finished at the training school and back at Waverley, enquire with admin. You’ll get a form to fill out and as soon as one becomes available you’ll be informed.
There are plenty staff that use the North Berwick train for travelling to and from work, however be advised there are a lot of shift that start before the first train arrives and finish after the last train departs, so you will be required to make your own way to and from work on those occasions.
