Hi guys
I have just received the email saying i am unsuccessful for the conductor online application stage.
They also said i need to wait for 6 months.. Is that for the same role or can i apply for other roles?

Sorry to hear about your news, however it’s all experience building to help you for next time. It sucks right now (trust me I know) but you will get there.

Regarding your question the 6 months just applies for the role you have applied for, you are welcome to apply for other roles.

That’s the spirit! It takes time.

I didn’t pass mines the first time and really hammered the preparations the next time round. You only get two attempts at the assessments and you can’t apply again unless the tests they use are changed, be mindful of that part. A career in the railway is still very good, even if it’s not as a Conductor. I was a Ticket Examiner for a number of years and loved that job as well.

Defin recommen pursuing other jobs in Scotrail if they ever come up in the interim.

Can I ask how you prepared when applying the second time around? Is there anything that can be done to improve and do well on the test, apart from practicing? Any way to assess myself and understand my strengths?

Unfortunately haven't heard back from recruitment so don't have feedback on how I performed. Guess I'll chase that up cause I think it'll help.

SR are notorious for doing this.
I was in the same situation (and frustration).
At the end my contract only came after about 10 days I was already in.
Not sure how to advise a part carry on contacting them.

Thanks, doesn't make sense why any employer would expect you to start without seeing and signing the terms and conditions of the job!

How long did it take them to contact you after your medical? I had my medical on the 3rd of September and haven’t heard a thing since then

The medical can take 7-10 working days to come back as part of the testing gets sent away. As they say, no news is good news.

ScotRail are supposedly looking to take a fair few Guards on at Edinburgh in the future, so its worth keeping an eye out for on the website for jobs coming up.

I have been giving a start date for ScotRail conductor post for 21st November but I've heard nothing since.

I had my medical on the 21st October and have not had any more information since then.
I handed my notice in with my current job as advised, but I'm now a bit worried at the lack of contact
I have sent emails to the recruitment department but I've heard nothing back.

Has anyone had similar issues?
Does anyone have any numbers I can contact them through?

Have you been issued with a contract of employment or a firm offer? If yes, then you’ve got nothing to worry about. The 21st November is your legal start date.

A couple of days before, you’ll get an email with your online onboarding stuff. You won’t hear much from recruitment unless they need something from you, they’re unbelievably busy at the moment. I started last week and recruitment were incredibly difficult to get hold of, but I did get everything in time.

presume it’s just Barrhead / Kilmarnock, East Kilbride and Edinburgh via Shotts and Carstairs which is still conductor

Thank you @Fat Pav I should of been more clear - was looking for the time length of the actual medical, I'm travelling 3.5 hours to Glasgow for it then the same home so was just looking at how long it was, to catch the best suited train home.

I’d say an hour, hour and a half tops from memory.

You'll be in the place for around 90 minutes, sometimes it can be quicker if its quiet. Drugs, alcohol, eyesight, hearing, Blood pressure readings as well as a medical questionnaire.

All pretty straightforward to be honest.

You don't need a previous costumer service job per se. Filling in the job application is all about demonstrating you understand what a conductor's job is, and how you would match that to your skill and experience.

Safety and following protocol is also very important in this job. So is being able to deal with the public.


If you have any example of dealing with a student or a coworker in your job, you can use that. They'll want to know you can handle conflict and tension and will want an example of outstanding customer service. If you deal with people in any way, try to think of a moment where you used good people skills to help someone.

I think they also want you to demonstrate you can work shifts and antisocial hours. Follow health and safety rules. Handle cash, etc.

My advice would be to go through the application form on the website. The form has all the questions they ask. Just fill in each box with a few words so you can go to the next page and have a look at what's asked.

I came from a background in care work as well as some volunteering which was safety critical elements. I also lived 6 miles from the depot advertised. So, it helped. I also had a huge gap in employment but I am good at filling job applications when I'm motivated. I still spent HOURS on it. I made it to the psychometric tests. But I didn't meet the standard.


Psychometric tests are another thing to consider. The level is high and getting practice material hugely recommended.

I applied to same role on 13th jan , it was shut before yesterday, I got an online assessment on Friday and got told I had passed today, hope it helps
