I have just found out about this. £19 return ANYWHERE on the network!. Brilliant!!! So me and the wife boarded the 10:10 from Kirkcaldy to Perth,from Perth to Inverness and from Inverness to kyle of lochalsh. 1 hour 15 minutes later the same in reverse.all for £38 squid.so long as you are over 55 the network is your oyster,the scenery was outstanding ,the scotrail staff really friendly and helpful and the trains clean and tidy.So it's off to Carlisle to be trailed through shops,then who knows?. Might try to get to wick and back in a day,it's a fantastic promotion on till 30 nov,time to start throwing the odd sicky at work and hobble down to the station.

I agree. Flexible, good value, customer friendly, everything a scheme aimed at mainly leisure travellers should be. Make the most of it while it lasts.

We used to have a Club 55 just as good in Wales . Unfortunately Arriva Trains Wales have upped the price so much and introduced so many restrictions that it is now much less appealing

It is certainly great value, but slightly less good scenically by this time of the year - many return journeys on long trips are in the dark, which is a shame!

Paul- I would suggest writing a letter to ATW and complain about the early evenings. It really isn't good enough

Does anyone know if it is permissible to use a Club 55 return to Berwick (which appears to use one of the CrossCountry services) as part of a split ticketing arrangement to travel on to Newcastle?

I suppose if all else fails, I could always get off at Berwick and have a cup of tea before carrying on to Newcastle on the next train but I'd prefer not to if it can be avoided.

Provided that the train stops at Berwick, and you hold another ticket for the leg between Berwick and Newcastle, then yes, you may. A minority of services do not stop at Berwick (and as you seem to be aware, East Coast are no longer participating in the scheme).

I usually use the 6:50 am EastCoast GLC - NCL on a First Advance but I can tolerate Standard on CrossCountry for the sake of being able to travel cheaply at short notice.

I don't really think it's worth going First Class on Cross Country after what I've become used to on East Coast - I'll just have my breakfast before I leave Glasgow.

I agree about the return journey being in the dark, but the outward trip up to the Kyles was gobsmackingly beautiful , the sun was out, the lochs and sea loch was like a mill pond and the reflections into the waters were spectacular, looking at all this on the outward trip was well worth the long outward trip, I wonder? What would be the best trip to make to see the relics of the Industrial Age? You know , old railway yards and ley's old sidings and factory sites .

Good plan, though it would be ScotRail, and unlikely to get much of a helpful response, if my past efforts are anything to go by.
