These units have 1st Class seating, but are declassified throughout on journeys from Inverness to Wick and Kyle.

Does anyone know the seat numbers of the 1st Class seats and which carriage they are usually in?

Do they even still have them marked out as 1st? The few 158s I used over Christmas on the Edinburgh-Dunblane service seemed to have been stripped of almost all trace of ever having had a designated 1st class end.

As of August last year the ones on the lines north of Inverness still had the full decor, including the lamps on the tables.

I think that applies to all the Inverness examples ( 158 701 to 158 725 ) whereas you will have used Haymarket examples ( 158 726 to 158 741 plus 782, 786, 789 and 867 to 871; maybe those have been declassified?

The accommodation is marked as being "First Class". The addition of power sockets, table lamp and window blinds are the additional benefits.

Which refurbishment though?
The Inverness refurb 158s I used during 2011 all had their first class, but the older ScotRail refurbs don't have any first class.

Thanks a lot for being the first person to answer my question!

thats okay dude :), how come you wanted to know the seat numbers?
if you wanted a reservation they only really tend to be reserved in coach b. on the kyle and far north line, first class is pretty much always unreserved :)

I believe they only have 'first class' because some routes they work (Inverness-Aberdeen and back down to Waverley) are shared with class 170s

Next time I'm up that way, I'm going to try asking for those seats specifically and see if they are reservable! So thanks a lot.

I'm up in Inverness this weekend.

So, for the record, the First Class seats are in coach A. They are numbered 1 & 2 (four seats around a table), 5 & 6 (airline), 7, 8 (four seats around a table), & 9 and 10 (four seats around a table), so a total of 14 seats altogether.

The refurbished 158s are smart - today, I travelled from Inverness to Aviemore on one of the few remaining unrefurbished ones, and there is a marked difference between the two. Not least that the refurbished one had heating (but was full of reservations) and the unrefurbished one was freezing cold (but empty).

My next trip to Scotland is at the beginning of May, so I am going to try and reserve some of the specified First Class seats on a trip to Kyle and back and see what happens!

The unrefurbed sets have heating too...
