scotrail 3 car 158?

Am I imagining things, or did I see a 3 car 158 at eastfield depot today? There is also one 158 carriage sitting at haymarket.

Hmm, could be that the solo carriage you saw has been taken out of traffic due to damage or failure, and the other half of the set has been marshalled into another unit to ensure maximum capacity? Rather like FGW's frankenstein 153/150 hybrid set. Do Scotrail have plenty of stock or do they struggle with the usual stock shortage issues?

Standard practice for FGW on Cardiff-Pompey to create 3 coach 158's. Certainly possible.

But they need an adaptor for yhe corridor do they not? Would scotrail have access to that part.

I'm sure they'd manage to sort something out. I very much doubt that FGW were planning on having to mate up one half of a 150 with a 153, but they did it! So I'm sure SR could form a three car 158 if the need arose.

I saw a rake of 3 158s together a while ago, but I haven't seen 3 carriages in a 158 up here at any point.

99.9% certain there isn't a 3-car 158 going around. ScotRail tends to need more units than capacity, although that issue has now eased with the entry of most of the Class 380 fleet. Many busy peak trains are now running in 5-coach formations (170+158), so I doubt that ScR would break up Class 158s for additional capacity.

Also, the local froth machine is silent on the issue

Agreed, it would not be possible for ScotRail to operate a three car Class 158 in normal passenger use
However, single cars have been moved around although very rare with the additional car normally marshalled such that it is hauled at the rear of the unit
Normally if one of the cars requires to visit the Lathe at Shields the entire unit goes
This therefore suggests the stored car is remaining at Haymarket, the spare is either en-route to Glasgow Works or is at Eastfield for easier road access to/from accident damage repair

From memory there is still an Inverness based Class 158 undergoing repair due to level crossing collision damage, and that would make sense as only car was severely damaged, in which case this may be this car making its way back after repair

Corkerhill perform the same splitting of units, the stored unit is placed into the short siding visible from the M77

I think I was mistaken. There are two 158's at Eastfield, in adjacent sidings, perhaps just the way I was looking at them.

But there is definately a 158 missing a carriage at Haymarket depot. Wonder where the other half is.

As above, Corkerhill do this very often when they want to examine one specific car and more commonly swap engines

It happens quite regular at Neville Hill to use units to move single vehicles from other units. I've used 153/155/158 and even a 142 to move single vehicles of 156/158.

could this extra carraige simply have been hooked up to a sister unit to allow the carraige to get "turned" on a run over the mainline, if it is a carraige that has been under repair and roaded back to the depot and dropped off wrong way round?

Possible I guess, but without adaptors, it'll only be able to be towed by it's head end & not the tail end.
