Are Scotrail still planning on using the Shop car on the 170/3 (former Hull Trains) ? I remember they tried selling food in it a couple of years ago but I've not seen anything since then.

a couple of months back the trains were refurbished with the Saltire seats and floors, and de-classified first class. But the shop wasn't removed for some reason.

Is this another lease where the units have to be restored to original condition at the end?

It was an odd refurb. The first class and internal doors were removed whilst it was being retrofitted to other 170/4 units. The sockets were removed from the first area but left in the middle coach. The shop was left in place too but won't be used again as these are now suburban units. Weird.

It would have been great use for longer services such as Edinburgh/Glasgow - Inverness/Elgin. Wonder how one of these on the West Highland Line or Far North Line would pan out ?

They were used exclusively on Glasgow/Edinburgh to Inverness when they arrived. The buffet counter was used and it sold extra hot food like bacon and sausage rolls. Unfortunately there was a fairly minor accident which resulted in a buffet steward being burned, and since then they have remained unused.

Waste of seats if it's never being used again?

It's a waste of a facility and money. If they used it then it would've provided more hot snacks which leaves passengers with more options for food and more of a chance of making money. But if it's not going to be used then it's a waste of seats as well.

I had never even realised any 170s had shops. I just assumed they were all like LM's (with or without 1st class).

Midland Mainline and Anglia Railways' 3 car units also had buffet counters, but they were removed following subsequent refurbishment and the need for more seats.

As a sidenote Scotrail have also bern unable to fit wi fi to these units due to extra gubbins in the bodyend cupboard to do with the buffet. (extra circuit breakers etc)
