I have just experienced Stadler FLIRT for the first time. Agreed: they are the answer in most cases and would be an immense upgrade from class 156s.
The large windows would be great for Scottish scenery and the bi-mode nature allowing maximum use of existing electrification around Strathclyde.
I think the only challenge would be accomodating the power pack on some short platforms.
Then again, there is such a thing as ASDO, plus having the doors in the middle of the cars rather than the ends might just buy some length back.
