Indeed, I had a look at these two plus North East Scotland ie Aberdeen.

The Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street sims aren't for sole play, indeed I reckon they are best played in multiplayer.

Although it has to be said Edinburgh is manageable in solo play as it has ARS.

Well I certainly need to research the local areas especially where all the sidings are, eventually worked out how to use the ground frames as well!

I'm familiar with the route coming into Edinburgh from Haymarket, North Berwick and Dunbar but northbound from Haymarket is something else.

I couldn't work the GF's at all. Gave it a release, and a GPL appeared, but I still cannot get the train out!

For these of you confused by ground frames and I was one, I have a link from the SimSig wiki which goes into great detail about the operation of the ground frames.

Lever Frames Outline

A Lever Frame is a small lever signal frame for local control of a siding or emergency crossover. Most such lever frames are called ground frames (GF). They are released on request to the main signal box so that the points and signals can be operated, and after activities are completed the levers are restored and the frame re-locked to the normal setting.

Typically there is a 'release' or 'king' lever which is (electrically) released by the main box, which allows it to be pulled to the reverse position to allow operation of the signals and points as required. After the required operations are completed, and the point and signal levers have been replaced to the normal position, the king lever is then placed in its normal position, and the frame is relocked by the main box.

SimSig Implementation

Previous simulations included the release arrangements and route setting by clicking directly on the appropriate signals. In the latest simulations (March 2010 onwards) the display and operation of the actual levers has been included. A new window can be opened, which display a representation of the lever frame, from which the levers are moved to enable the required activity. More than one frame can be opened at a time.

This module is still being developed and there may be changes over time including telephone calls and better graphics.

In multiplay lever operation is only available to the server/host, although clients can still give and cancel releases.
Operation
Opening the lever frame view

Click on Show/Lever Frames, and select the relevant lever frame to display:

The levers are coloured by function, as in a normal lever frame:
Lever 1 (blue/brown) King or Release lever lock;
Lever 2 (black) point operation;
Levers 3 & 4 (red) signals, in each direction. Normally Inbound (into siding) is lever 3, Outward (from siding) is lever 4.

Hovering your cursor over the lever will pop-up a description describing what the lever does.

The lever frame window is closed by clicking on the 'X' in the title bar.
Operation
Signaller

1.
Click on the F(ree) button at the location, which will flash until the king lever is reversed, whereupon it will stay lit;

Lever Frame Operator

1.
Move lever 1 down into the reverse position to unlock the other levers;
2.
Move lever 2 down into the reverse position, to switch the points (their position will be visible in the main window);
3.
Move either lever 3 or 4 to clear the required signal for the movement (can be seen in main view);

After the move is completed and the train is clear of the points, replace the levers in the reverse order:

1.
Restore both levers 3 & 4 to the normal (upper) position;
2.
Restore lever 2 to replace the points to the normal position;
3.
Restore lever 1 to normal, to relock the other levers;

Signaller

1.

Once all the levers are correctly restored, the lever frame is relocked on the main signalbox panel by right-clicking on the 'F' button, wherupon the N(ormal) indicator lights.

Notes

1.

The exact interlocking may vary from frame to frame and the simulation instructions should be referred to for exact instructions.

2.

Depending on the lever interlocking it maybe possible to clear both (opposing) signals at the same time. This is because any moves are carried out under local control, by shunt signals and the driver will be proceeding “on sight”.

3.

Some lever frames may have more or less than 4 levers.

4.

Some lever frames have more than one release, each release allowing certain activities to take place without blocking normal signalling on adjacent lines.

5.

Many lever frames do not control actual signals on the ground. Drivers of trains are given verbal and/or visual authorisation to proceed by the lever frame operator. In SimSig this authorisation is shown by the use of fictional shunt signals (these will be hidden when the frame has not been released).

Ah, cheers all. I didn't know they had actually simulated the operation of the lever frames - I thought it would be done by the system

No problem, just have a play with it and see what's what which is what I did.

Edinburgh is indeed excellent. Tried it with a fellow forum member on a private multiplayer with no ARS, a challenge it was. Some heavy delays involved but we got there. Had to stop after a while though, it was getting too busy for just us two.

Central Scotland I got onto on the first hosted game after it's release, another excellent sim but I wouldn't try that on my own.

North East Scotland looks good but I've not had a go on it at all yet.

Hmmm, might have problems playing North East Scotland which is otherwise Aberdeen as there's no timetable yet.

Still I agree with what you say about Edinburgh, it is rather enjoyable and seeing as it's one of my favourite places is great be able to regulate the services and seeing the places I've been recreated in this sim and ther other two.

Certainly was unexpected though, next sim I'm waiting for is Three Bridges.

It was very unexpected! I'm waiting for Euston next.

I found the Incident Control panel, it will make things a lot more fun when hosting, and faults a lot more interesting!

Though it identifies points and track circuits as a number; how are we meant to find out which number the points are?

Had a quick go on edinburgh last night, looks quiet managable in one person operation, am I right in thinking that these three releases are more aimed at multiplayer rather then single player?

Me my self I prefer playing cambridge and east croydon, can't wait for the rest of three bridges to come out.

If you use the little cursor button above the points list, you can click a point/track circuit and it will bring up the relevant number in the list.

Continued for a couple of hours (so I could do an Asda move earlier, have now lined up a mahoosive roast dinner :D) on Edinburgh, just with three people (got another mate who's never been to Edinburgh so needing geographic knowledge on it too :D) and no ARS still. Much easier when you only have 2 or 3 panels to manage. Forgot the curteousy call to Longannet the first time I sent them a train, oops...Annoyingly if you're on multiplayer and on the relevant panel for sending them stuff, the host still has to do the call. Pain in the neck when the host is managing the busiest panels :-x

North East Scotland, I have plans to co-ordinate a timetable with my two flatmates (who know timetabling for SimSig inside out) for that one. Gotta download it in a bit actually to revive my geographic knowledge of the area actually first. Shall be looking out for WTTs for that area now to get it all done <D

Expecting Derby to be the next one personally, which if it is next will enable some more interesting multiplayer games with a Derby and Sheffield chain <D

Now to attempt Edinburgh on a solo game (with the help of ARS of course) <D

Can anyone tell me what lines are electrified in this SimSig? It doesn't specify what is so makes rerouting trains a dodgy business!

Timetable for NE Scotland begun in earnest last night after running some ghost trains for timing runs, 10 trains in so far for a 1981 timetable. Not expecting it to be finished for quite some time, as there's a lot to put in then test. Still, got two other people to help compile it all :D
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
TT for NE Scotland caped, found out a few minutes ago that the beta version on the website had a time limit on it which has now passed. Glad I hadn't done any more work on that than I had done so far!

Might well work on that one for Royston after all...

North East Scotland is in beta stage, & explains this on the SimSig website, hence why there's no timetable with it, it's just there as a taste of what it's gonna be like when it's finished.
