Scotland in September

Is September a bad month to visit Scotland by train? Idk but autumn seems to have lots of weather disruption lately in the UK.

I'm mostly asking about the classic Glasgow > Mallaig, Kyle > Inverness, Inverness > Edinburgh circuit plus LNER each way to London.

I climbed Ben Nevis in near-Mediterranean conditions, early September 1998. Conversely, when I did Scottish Rail Rover week trips in August 1988 and 1990 (which included Kyle + Thurso + Wick but not Fort William + Mallaig), it tipped down all week on both years.

My experience, living in the West of Scotland, is that the best weather is usually in May and June, whereas the main tourist months of July and August can be wet. September can be variable; This year we had some lovely warm sunny weather in the middle of the month, but that cannot be guaranteed....

I agree. May & June is often good and we, too, have had remarkably splendid weather in the Highlands during September. Tends to apply to the whole of the North West (including the Lakes and the Borders).
