school leavers jobs

hello, ive just left school and i am looking for a job on the railway in the nottingham/derby area. I have heard about the nr apprenticeships but i have also heard that it involves a long stay in portsmouth which i don't want to do. I have also asked em trains to see if they do apprenticeships as i did my work experience there but now i am a bit stuck
please could someone help

When you say "school leaver" do you mean that you are 16 or 18?

Jobs for under 18s are very scarce indeed in this industry as a great deal of roles are safety critical, or subject to working hours which would be illegal for someone of that age.

Network Rail would have been my first idea, although if you are not willing to travel/move you are seriously reducing your chances of getting a job.

What you'll find many people say is that you will have to start at the bottom and work your way up, so you might have to work doing train presentation (i.e. cleaning) just to get into the company. Once you are in it is normally easier to get jobs higher up the ladder than if you were coming from the outside.

Don't just look at the railways - any job is better than none. This will give you some experience and something to put on the CV. I also notice from your other post that you volunteer at a preserved railway - keep that up and make sure to mention it on your CV/at interviews.

Most at 16 start on stations in catering outlets, there are occasionally other jobs which come up, none are operational jobs until you are 18; plenty of apprenticeships appearing from time to time on a range of company websites.
