Scarborough To Sheffield

Hello ,

Was their a direct train between these 2 stations at one point?

What routes can i go on this journey ?

There still are direct trains between Scarborough and Sheffield and what routes would depend on the tickets held but broadly direct trains, or via Doncaster and Hull or via Doncaster/Leeds and York.

On a weekday, there are three through Northern trains each way between Scarborough and Sheffield, but the journey on the through trains is much slower than getting a Transpennine Express train between Scarborough and York, and changing at York, and doing York/Sheffield via Doncaster or Leeds.

Back in Northern Spirit days, there used to be a great many more through trains from Scarbrough to Sheffield. A rule of thumb said that the first afternoon departure to Sheffield was a 5 car train made up of a 2 car 158 and a 3 car 158 put together.

I remember distinctly that there was a first class section which was declassified on the Hull - Scarbrough section and vice-versa. I recall using it one Christmas after making a shopping trip to Driffeld from Hull as standard was full and standing.

Now the trains are done by Northern using 158s, although I do sometimes see the odd 144 making it to Sheffield from Scarbrough
