Hello all, quick question..

I recently traveled on 1J29. A service from Scarborough to Sheffield using a Northern liveried 158, and advertised on the Pis as a Northern service.
However to my surprise, the driver that boarded the service at Scarborough was wearing a jumper with the first logo, as well as a rucksack that was embroidered with First Transpennine Express.

Do TPEX drivers drive any portion of this route by any chance?

Many thanks,
Kieran

Yes Northern do indeed hire some crews from TransPennine at Scarborough and also at Cleethorpes. Until recently TransPennine hired Northern crews from Blackpool and Northern hired TransPennine crews from Manchester Airport.

It's a relatively common occurrence. I understand TransPennine also hire some Freightliner drivers from Glasgow, GTR hire Southeastern crews from Tonbridge and Sevenoaks and so on and so on.

Thank you Star mill for this insight :)
I suppose, leading from this would be the question(s) : are the crews hired as a last resort to cover a shortfall, or is this a regular/ semi regular arrangement?

Additionally, how do these crew aquire the nessacarily traction / route knowledge, when they are working for another train operating company?

Most of the examples are permanent arrangements which save what would otherwise be very long road journeys for the crew.

The examples on services between Manchester Airport and Blackpool / Barrow / Scotland were temporary and caused by franchise re-mapping (where one service group moves between train companies). As for how they acquire the necessary knowledge, in the same way that they normally would presumably.

Scarborough has been a longstanding arrangement which saves Northern having to taxi crews to and from Bridlington or otherwise having to have a very small depot. In the old days of course it was all one company. When northern run from York direct that could change.
