My son (who is 4) and I go on "train adventure" days out to various locations - in the last few months we have been to Doncaster, Didcot Parkway and Eastleigh.
He's turning 5 the weekend after this and I will have to start paying for him so might not be able to go as much.
He really wants to see a Powerhaul Class 70 as he has been raving about them since he first saw one in Rail Express and has never seen one live.
We live in London and I dont want to go more than 50 miles outside London.
Is there anywhere within that radius where we might have the chance to see a class 70 on a Saturday? Doesn't matter what livery (Freightliner, Colas etc). Thanks.

Basingstoke has both Freightliner and Colas, but if you can go a bit further afield, Eastleigh. Although, it is a weekend so you will have less chance of seeing a 70.

Yeah, was thinking that. We were in Eastleigh a few months ago on a Tuesday and didnt see any but down to bad luck more than anything.
Thanks for replying.

Ipswich might have one in the yard but that is 68 miles away from Liverpool Street.

EDIT: Basingstoke had one scheduled 70 on a saturday but I have seen it a lot as a 66.

Out of interest is there much freight through Basingstoke on a Saturday? I presume mainly 66s but any others?

Get a family railcard, you'll find it's often cheaper than it was before you got one. Costs about £30 though or £15 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers.

Not too much at Basingstoke, and it is all 66s except the 1 scheduled 70 at 11:40.

Yeah, 1 adult is actually more expensive than 1 adult/1 child w/Family Railcard.

What about wembley?. I'm sure there must be some heading that way, I thinking west coast - East Anglia traffic, that would hit wembley first before starting to head off wouldn't it?
