Saturday 442 Eastbourne diagrams

Some unusual summer only services operated by 2x442 between Victoria and Eastbourne on Saturdays.

Outbound in the morning 0822 non stop Eastbourne to Brighton and then continues at 0851 non-stop to London Victoria arrving at 0956. Returns to Eastbourne direct from Victoria leaving at 1721 and arriving at 1843.

What is the point of these services, are they needed for capacity reasons? The return Eastbourne working in the evening is non stop from Victoria and did not appear to be very well used yesterday, perhaps if it called at Lewes at least that might help to generate some demand.

I believe they cater for students travelling to London at the weekend.
There is a balancing working back in the late afternoon/early evening.

Yes, the sheer number of overseas students that come to the Sussex Coast every summer means many services to London (and Brighton) get uncomfortably full (and noisy!).
Though many do return on other services in the evening.

Is it technically open to all passengers or just students? If it's open to all, I might nab a sneaky Eastbourne - Brighton trip on a Wessie. With the guard's blessing, naturally.

Travelling on a train with a couple of hundred excited overseas students is not exactly my idea of fun!

*I would've moved into a different carriage, but my friend was asleep and I didn't have the heart to wake her...
