Hi everyone , I need some advice on buying a sat Nav

I have seen at Halfords a Tom Tom at £79.99 this seems good value ?

My concern is updating the device to keep the routes up to date, how do you do this and how much does it cost - or is the device self updating

Any help will be great

Cheers

Paul

I have the Sat Nav they are advertising for 79.99, had it since about April and paid £109.99. Rate it highly, considerably better than my previous Garmin device.
Also it has far more detail in European mapping than my Garmin did.

Do you have a smart phone? I recently got an app for free that is pretty good. Okay it's not quite as good for things like slipways and telling you what lane to choose at roundabouts. But for the amount I drive its not a massive problem

I have a iPhone - but find that it updates too slow to make turns in time ?

The TomTom has map sharing, users can update accordingly and share, or you can buy the official map updates. I've used the map sharing and many are of decent standard.
If you find an error, perhaps due to a road layout change etc you can report an error and update, I havent worked this function out yet, but assume you need a passenger, unless it remembers a log of where you drove and you can correct at end of journey.
you can download loads of free voices and position icons. I currently have bugs bunny voice set.

Brilliant - it seems good but ? I had heard that the updates cost as much as the device ?

New roads cant be updated by the free share facility, the updates for new roads are £75 per year, Halfords sell some models with unlimited lifetime free updates in the price.
Items that are shared for free
The FREE Daily Map Changes that you receive from the Map Share community include these more dynamic and frequent changes on the road:

Changed speed limits
New street names
Blocked roads
New traffic directions
Altered turn restrictions

There are however a selection of changes that will be applied directly to the map on your device and these are also the changes that can be shared with the Map Share community:

Changed speed limits
New street names
Blocked roads
New traffic directions
Altered turn restrictions

On my IPhone I paid for the app called NavFree. It was a whopping £2.99, plus 99p for a postcode plugin, and the same again for a speed camera awareness plugin. All updates since have been free.

In the 14 months I've been using it I've yet to have an issue with it and have made it to every destination so far, (and with some of the silly places they put kids football pitches this is no mean feat)!

Try it out for the tiny price, if you don't like it then go with the expensive solution.

The XL for £79.99 is deffinatly a good buy. We have the XL Classic Western Europe, or for the same price there is the XL IQ2. The main differance between the two is that the IQ2 is UK and Irl mapping, and slightly updated software, and the XL Classic has the European mapping.

The XL series are very reliable. However if you wanted to stretch your budget a little, there is the Start 25 Special Eddition for £129.99. This has updated software to the XL series, an updated lane guidence screen. Plus Western European mapping and providing you purchase it before the 24th December you will also get free life time map updates.

Both have been selling like hot cakes this weekend, and infact we actualy sold out of the Start 25 SE on Sunday.

All map up dates have to be done manualy via the TomTom website. And I belive cost around £20 - £30 a turn (hence why I recomend the Start 25 with free map updates), this is usualy done about once or twice a year. There is also a software update which needs to be done a few times a year (and isn't coverd by any free offer) but certainly needs to be done to keep the device in top working order. When you register your email they should let you know when both are avalible.

If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.

I have a Nokia N8, which includes Nokia Maps. This is a full sat-nav app (with turn-by-turn voice directions) and you can download the maps to the phone so it works offline, without eating up all your data. Updated regularly, it includes safety camera locations and real time traffic updates. All for free.

Most Nokia smartphones have it included. If you have an iPhone, it goes under the name of Here Maps.
