Sandite

Stupid slightly technical question, does hot sandite have a slightly gunpowdery smell? On a 142 following a NR MPV which was spraying the railheads. Under braking there is a very distinct smell similar to some of the powdered metals used in fireworks, or even cutting discs. First thought was the brakes toasting themselves but I am wondering what residue from spraying would do.

would it not be a different brake block material perhaps, that you are smelling, rather than sandite? New blocks give off different odours, compared to a 'bedded in' set..

Could be, though the smell wasn't apparent arriving at Manchester Picc, when we were no longer following the RHTT, one of those odd things some of us notice I guess.

Certain metal compounds similar to that used in fireworks can be added to increase the conspicuity of the sandite dispensed. making it appear white for example.

That may explain it, I'd never noticed the smell before which is what made me think of what had passed the station immediately ahead of the 142 I got on, and their brakes work on the outer diameter of the wheel which would heat any residue which had been picked up.

Funny enough when I got off my train yesterday evening I could smell a slight firework smell but I dont think anyone has been letting you off.
